The Witcher 4 Enters Preproduction, CD Projekt Red Issues Statement
While not much is known about the upcoming The Witcher 4, CD Projekt Red has confirmed that the project has already entered its preproduction phase.
The news comes via an update in a CD Projekt Red’s blog post, which noted that the studio has officially concluded its research phase for the upcoming game.
“We are very eager to revisit the universe which has shaped our history to such an extent,” said president Adam Kiciński in the post. “We have recently concluded the research phase for the first game in the new Witcher saga, which means that from now on further development expenditures will be capitalized on our balance sheet.”
With the game just now entering preproduction, that means it’s pretty safe to assume that the game is still many years away from release. So far, the only things that have been confirmed about The Witcher 4 is that it will run on Unreal Engine 5, the newest version of Epic Games engine as part of a multi-year partnership with the companies and that it will feature a new school, the School of the Lynx, after CD Projekt Red released a teaser image of a Lynx medallion, leading many to believe that perhaps Ciri would be the new main character of the game.
Elsewhere in the world of The Witcher, CD Projekt Red is also set to release an updated version of The Witcher 3 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC sometime later this year.
