Ubisoft Announces Uplay+ Subscription Service For $14.99/Month
Ubisoft is officially jumping into the subscription service model. As part of its E3 2019 press conference, Ubisoft unveiled the Uplay+ subscription service, which gives players access to Ubisoft's PC games library for a monthly fee of $14.99.
Some game publishers have decided to give the subscription model a go within gaming. The EA version, called EA Access, has proved to be a handy option for some gamers, with the service finally reaching the PS4 after years in the wilderness. As other companies keep a close eye on the Netflix model to see how it fares, it seems as though this could be a major change in gaming as a whole.
Ubisoft has clearly decided that it wants to try out this model as well. Starting on September 3 in North America and Europe, the service will give access to over 100 games within the Ubisoft PC library, including new releases such as the upcoming Watch Dogs Legion. What's more, it's also coming to Google Stadia once the platform launches. Find out more in the video below.
As of September 3, Uplay+ will launch and alongside the over 100 games there will also be other benefits. According to Ubisoft, subscribers will also get DLC for those titles included as well as being able to access beta testing for various upcoming games. As such, for those who are desperate to get hold of games within these beta stages, this could be a good option.
That said, there could be an issue with the sheer number of subscriptions available on the market. Between this, Microsoft and EA's offering that adds up to a fair amount, particularly when things like PS Plus and Nintendo's Switch subscription are also taken into account. It may well be at some point that the number of subscription services on the market means players will need to pick and choose which they go for - if they go for any at all.
Either way, it will be interesting to see how Ubisoft fares. Getting another major publisher lined up for a subscription service may test the waters to see just how many can fit in the market at once. However, Ubisoft may find that it needs to offer up something else enticing to really get players invested.
