Sony: Ps4 market share 'frequently' over 90% in continental europe

Sony has announced incredibly strong PlayStation 4 sales in Europe mean the console is enjoying a massive market share when compared with its rivals.

Speaking to VG247 at this year's E3 conference, Sony Europe president Jim Ryan explained the PS4 has at least 70 percent of the market share in all European countries, with it peaking at 90 percent in certain countries.

"We have a very significant market leadership," he said. "Well, we have market leadership in every country in Europe, and have very significant market leadership in continental Europe. Extremely significant. I don't think market share's any less than 70 per cent, and frequently greater than 90 per cent in continental Europe."

Traditionally, PlayStation sales have been much stronger in Europe than those of Microsoft's Xbox, which traditionally performs better in North America and the UK. This has changed recently, however, thanks to the PS4 launching in most European countries by the end of 2013, while the Xbox One didn't crop up until late 2014. Additionally, the PS4 is currently the better performing console in the UK with over 2 million consoles sold as of this May, while the last update for Xbox One was 1 million consoles sold last November.

As for the global picture, things are slightly harder to get a handle on. The PS4 has sold over 22.3 million consoles as of the end of April, with 38 million expected to be sold by the end of March 2016. Microsoft's keeping its cards closer to its chest, however, with the only sales update we've received being in last November, when nearly 10 million had been sold-in to retailers - not to gamers.
