While Outer Wilds has been around for several years, a PS5 and Xbox Series X update was recently released, improving its performance on the next-gen consoles. With the release of this update, new and veteran players on these gaming systems have a new reason to check out the game.

Developed by Mobius Digital and published by Annapurna, Outer Wilds was initially released in 2019 and received critical acclaim due to its fascinating gameplay premise; the player is stuck in a time loop that repeats every 22 minutes, causing them to respawn. All the while, they are tasked with exploring the interesting solar system in which the game takes place. While the title is playable on a number of systems, this latest update should please next-gen gamers.

Recently, Mobius Digital announced that Outer Wilds had received a next-gen update. The news came via a September 15 tweet from the official Mobius Digital Twitter account in which the developer revealed improved performance for Xbox Series X and PS5. According to the message from the developer, the game now runs at 60fps. Furthermore, the max resolution has been increased to support 4K. A short video was released in conjunction with the announcement to celebrate this next-gen update for Outer Wilds.

Beyond bringing an enhanced version of Outer Wilds to PS5 and Xbox Series X, Mobius Digital answered several questions regarding the next-gen update. Among the answers, it revealed that upgrading to the next-gen version of the game from the PS4 and Xbox One versions is free. The response from the company went on to state that both the digital and disc versions of the game support the upgrade. In addition, players can keep their previous save from the old version if it was linked to their account, however, it is worth noting that trophies do not carry over.

Besides these answers, it was clarified that Outer Wilds had already been able to run on next-gen machines before the update. However, Mobius Digital noted that these newer consoles emulated the older Xbox One and PS4 versions, which meant bugs and “other backwards compatibility issues such as controller input lag” could occur. With this in mind, the developer stated that this new update would be the optimal way to play the game on next-gen consoles.

It will be interesting to see what the future holds for the award-winning Outer Wilds and Mobius Digital. For example, the developer reiterated during this announcement that it is still working on an updated Nintendo Switch version. However, it said the release date of that version was still “unknown.” Hopefully, that update can improve the graphical performance for fans playing on Nintendo Switch whenever it is released.

Outer Wilds is available on PC, Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
