The cause of Diablo II: Resurrected's ongoing server issues has apparently been identified by developers at Blizzard Entertainment. The action role-playing game is a remaster of 2000's Diablo II, and its expansion Lord of Destruction, using modern technology. Since its launch in September Diablo II: Resurrected has faced server instability, and the issue has not yet been fixed for all players.

Diablo II: Resurrected was praised upon release, with the title successfully recapturing the gameplay and atmosphere of Blizzard's classic 2000 game. However, the remaster's stability issues unfortunately led to many unhappy gamers who were unable to enjoy the game. The server instability issues caused several problems, such as characters being suddenly deleted when players tried to load up a saved game. Server outages also made it impossible to play the game online with other users. These server issues still affect Diablo II: Resurrected, though Blizzard has apparently discovered the source of the problems.

In a post to the developer's official forums, Blizzard has revealed the exact reasons for Diablo II: Resurrected's massive server issues. Various different problems are responsible for the ongoing issues, and Blizzard intends to solve them all individually over time. A huge surge in server traffic on October 9, along with an update released the day before, overwhelmed Blizzard's global server and led to an outage. Legacy code, reused from the original version of Diablo II, also played a large role in the server instability.

Despite just releasing last month, Diablo II: Resurrected recaptures old-school gameplay by directly mirroring the original release. While graphics and network services have been updated for modern sensibilities, game balance and item systems have remained exactly the same as in 2000. This creates a unique feeling of both nostalgia and novelty, with long-term fans being able to experience the role-playing game in a whole new way. However, this commitment to retaining aspects of the original Diablo II contributed to issues with Resurrected and its legacy code.

Diablo II: Resurrected was highly praised upon release, but so far the title has been held back by its unstable server performance. Disappearing characters and the inability to play online have spoiled the experience for many players since launch. While these problems are still ongoing, it is reassuring to learn that Blizzard has identified all of the issues that contribute to this poor performance. Finding the troublesome factors is the first step towards solving them, so hopefully Diablo II: Resurrected will receive some effective patches in the near future.

Diablo II: Resurrected is available on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch and PC.
