Destiny 2's Forsaken Expansion Revealed
As promised, Activision and Bungie finally detailed what to expect from Destiny 2's upcoming Forsaken expansion today. Releasing on September 4, the first major expansion for the first-person shooter will include two new locations to explore, and a collaborative endgame mode called Gambit. This is the new feature that Activision President Cody Johnson was previously talking up as "one that introduces a whole new style of play for first-person shooter gaming generally and certainly for the shared-world shooter space that Destiny created."
The biggest knock against Destiny 2 after release was a lacking amount of postgame content, and that's what Gambit mode looks to fix. It's a 4-versus-4 mode that blends traditional competitive multiplayer with "unpredictable elements of [player versus environment play]." Bungie's Scott Taylor announced that the mode will be at E3 2018, and that the studio has "always strived to create innovative experiences that will challenge and reward different kinds of players and ensure their beloved pastime is rewarding." In addition to the new mode, there will be a new story campaign developed by High Moon Studios that has players teaming up with Cayde-6 to chase after those that escaped the Prison of Elders.
A first-of-its kind for Destiny, Gambit is a new, hybrid 4v4 mode that merges both PvE and PvP experiences into an epic battle. This entirely new way to play Destiny 2 offers something for all types of gamers to enjoy, appealing to those who thrive on the competitive challenge of PvP gameplay, while seamlessly blending the collaborative and unpredictable elements of PvE. This new mode will be playable at the 2018 Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) held from June 12-14 at the Los Angeles Convention Center.
Forsaken will take players to two separate locations: a new section of the Reef called The Tangled Shore that has "fallen to lawlessness," and The Dreaming City, the home of the Awoken faction of humans that will be specifically used for endgame content such as the next raid. Bungie says that the location will be filled with "secrets to discover and bosses to defeat." While these two locations will be exclusive to the new expansion, a free update available to all Destiny 2 owners will add in several new features including a revamped weapon slot system, improvements to mods, and other user interface upgrades.
The major Destiny 2 expansion will be priced at $39.99, but there are a number of ways to purchase it. Those that also want access to three premium content releases (that are set to arrive in Winter 2018, Spring 2019, and Summer 2019) can pick it up alongside what Activision is calling the Destiny 2 Annual Pass for $69.99. Additionally, Those that don't yet own the first-person shooter can buy the Digital Deluxe version of the game for $79.99 to get all of the above, the base game, and the previous downloadable content.
Fans have complained loudly about Destiny 2's lack of a solid post-game. Forsaken is designed specifically to fix that issue, and it looks like Bungie is taking the right steps. More will be known come September, but it players have a good reason to be excited again about Destiny.
