Dark Souls & Bloodborne's Composer Is Returning For Elden Ring
The renowned composer and musician for FromSoftware titles like Dark Souls and Bloodborne has confirmed that she will be scoring the soundtrack for the company's upcoming game Elden Ring. Months before the title's announcement, rumors speculating on George R. R. Martin’s involvement in a FromSoftware project were widespread. Nothing was confirmed nor denied, however, until it was made official at E3 2019.
Elden Ring is the upcoming fantasy RPG borne from the minds of FromSoftware creator Hidetaka Miyazaki and George R.R. Martin, and will be published by Bandai Namco. The title has yet to receive a release date, but Elden Ring’s E3 announcement trailer gave viewers a glimpse into a bloody, complex and vast world filled with intrigue and supernatural elements. Composer Yuka Kitamura has produced the critically acclaimed original soundtracks for Dark Souls II, Dark Souls III, and Bloodborne. Relatively quiet since the release of her last award-winning project, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, Kitamura is known for creating the moving and captivating sounds lovers of FromSoftware games have come to know.
A Twitter interaction with an enthusiastic fan who asked Kitamura to confirm whether or not she would be scoring Elden Ring received the unexpected positive response from the legendary composer a week later. Her confirmation received fervid welcome and excited cheers from followers of hers and of fans of Elden Ring alike. This will see Kitamura once again reuniting with Miyazaki on an epic AAA project for the first time since the company's last game, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. In Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, Yuka Kitamura not only scored the title but also played the violin, cello and used her own voice for some of the pieces in the official soundtrack.
If the soundtrack in the trailer is anything to go by, Kitamura is the next best piece of the Elden Ring puzzle. Over the years she has successfully produced soundtracks ranging from medieval to regal and even traditional Japanese compositions. With Miyazaki describing this new FromSoftware title as “Dark Souls evolved,” and confirming that Elden Ring will boast a larger and more open world for players to explore, there will be lots of room for Kitamura to create another special soundtrack.
Known for his incredible ability to imagine entire worlds and histories, George R. R. Martin’s involvement in this title may hint at a massive game with an intricate, detailed and violent story line. Miyazaki has earned himself a reputation for creating unforgiving games for players across the titles he has directed, and Elden Ring will most likely be no different. The collaboration of these two dark creators will most likely be a memorable torture for gamers, and Kitamura’s score may be the only element which will provide players with soul-stirring comfort as they most likely die again and again. If anyone can bring to life Hidetaka Miyazaki’s direction, it will be Yuka Kitamura.
