Bayonetta Studio Teases A Game That Turns 'The Action Genre On Its Head'
Bayonetta and NieR: Automata developer PlatinumGames has big plans for the future, for they are developing a new game that will reportedly upend the action genre. Largely comprised of former Capcom staff, PlatinumGames was founded in 2007 and featured some of the premier talents in Japanese video game development.
PlatinumGames' early success came in the form of 2009's Bayonetta, a fast-paced action game in the vein of director Hideki Kamiya's Devil May Cry series, and the Shinji Mikami directed Vanquish proved that the studio had plenty of innovative ideas the following year. Since then, the developer has worked on a number of high-profile releases including Star Fox Zero, Metal Gear Rising, and Transformers: Devastation. And now, they are looking to change the industry as a whole with one of their next releases.
Two key members from PlatinumGames - director Hideki Kamiya and producer Atsushi Inaba - recently gave a talk at BitSummit in Japan (via DualShockers), where they revealed that the studio is working on an unannounced title that will "turn the action genre on its head."
The two PlatinumGames employees didn't have much else to say about the unannounced game, but they did have some other teases in store. Kamiya asked the crowd if they were interested in playing his action game The Wonderful 101 if it was ported from Nintendo Wii U to Switch, and the question received a positive response. Kamiya jokingly stated that the game should've been named "The Unwonderful 13," referencing the game's poor sales on Wii U. The outspoken director also talked about game budgets and said that having a lot of money doesn't guarantee success. As an example, Kamiya told the crowd to look at Pacific Rim Uprising since that was a "crappy movie" that had a high price tag attached to its production.
While this is obviously a lofty claim from PlatinumGames, they are one of the few studios out there that can actually back it up. Last year, the developer released NieR: Automata, which won several game of the year awards after receiving critical and commercial acclaim. PlatinumGames also has a long history of creating top-notch action titles ranging from the aforementioned Bayonetta to Metal Gear Rising and The Wonderful 101, all of which have found loyal fan bases in addition to achieving acclaim.
It's especially interesting to hear the unannounced project receiving such high praise from Hideki Kamiya. Considering he's the creative mind behind Devil May Cry, Okami, Bayonetta, and Viewtiful Joe, his glowing words shouldn't be taken lightly. While Kamiya is currently directing the Nintendo Switch exclusive Bayonetta 3, he was previously working on the Microsoft published Scalebound until that game was surprisingly canceled in early 2017.
