Battlefield 2042 May Get Delayed This Week, Insiders Say
An industry insider has teased that a game delay will soon be announced, with the title in question believed to be Battlefield 2042. The next big shooter from EA DICE is scheduled to release in just a month's time, but with the end of the year fast approaching, a delay for Battlefield 2042 could push the title into 2022.
Battlefield 2042 is set to be one of the biggest releases of the year. The title was revealed earlier this summer, and promises to deliver the boldest Battlefield experience to date. The game will release on both last and new-gen systems, but aims to make the most of PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X hardware which will support battles for up to 128 players. The game will offer futuristic war with modern weapons and technology, but will still pay homage to the series' roots thanks to the Battlefield Portal. The Portal will feature reimagined experiences from Battlefield 1942, Battlefield: Bad Company 2, and Battlefield 3, at launch. A Battlefield 2042 beta test is expected to begin this month, giving players a taste of what they can expect once the game releases.
Games journalist and insider Jeff Grubb has caused a stir online after tweeting that a "singular" game delay will be coming this week. As spotted by VGC, the game in question is believed to be Battlefield 2042, corroborated by YouTuber Dealer and journalist Nick Baker. Both have claimed that Battlefield 2042 will be delayed to 2022, though known Battlefield leaker Tom Henderson believes that, while the rumor of a delay is correct, the game will only be pushed until November. While a delay hasn't yet been confirmed by EA, the many sources backing up the rumor suggest there could be some truth to it. With Grubb claiming the announcement is coming this week, fans won't have long to wait to find out more.
While others have claimed the delayed game will be the upcoming Battlefield 2042, Grubb himself didn't name the title he was referring to, and there are many other upcoming games that could be hit with a pushback. The global pandemic has seen a rise in video game delays over the last couple of years as development studios have switched to working from home to better adhere to social distancing guidelines. Distribution struggles with physical games have also impacted some releases, and while much of the world is returning to normal, delays are still commonplace and likely will be for the next few months and beyond. Some of 2021's most highly-anticipated games have been delayed until 2022 including Dying Light 2, God of War: Ragnarok, and Horizon Forbidden West.
The release of Battlefield 2042 should be mere weeks away, but if the rumors are correct, fans could have a long wait on their hands. While Henderson's belief in a November release date delays the game by just a month, the claims of a 2022 release may be a heavy blow for those waiting for the game. That being said, while game delays can be disappointing, the extra time in development can help significantly, and delaying a game is preferable to releasing an unfinished game that's later updated with patches like Cyberpunk 2077. EA will hopefully offer some clarity in the coming days.
