Every new update about The Flash and the DC Universe's future points toward how incredible the movie must be after all. Warner Bros. took nearly a decade to make a solo film for The Flash that stars Ezra Miller. While The Flash was mired in various controversies coming from its main star for quite some time, the outlook on the film continues to change as its summer release date draws closer. This is especially true after Warner Bros. debuted the full The Flash movie trailer, highlighting Michael Keaton's Batman return, Sasha Calle's Supergirl debut, and a story that mixes heart and action with the multiverse setting.
The Flash's trailer is the latest positive update for the movie that has continued to increase the hype surrounding the DC Universe's 2023 movie. This comes despite confirmed plans from new DC Studios co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran that the movie works to reset the franchise. That could mean The Flash is left out of the new DC Universe continuity that it helps create, one that is already confirmed to include a new Batman and Superman. However, all signs point to DC Studios having a major hit on its hands, as The Flash movie could be better than ever expected.
The Flash Reportedly Is One Of DC’s Best Movies Ever
The Flash's hype has continued to grow over the last year or so thanks to constant reports that it is one of DC's best movies ever made. These reports come on the back of the film receiving rave reactions from test screenings that Warner Bros. has held throughout its development. They have consistently stated that The Flash is up there with The Dark Knight in terms of the best DC movies. While some skeptics could suggest that there have not been many other great DC films released since then, the test screening reports suggest that The Flash might be better than well-reviewed box office hits like Wonder Woman or Joker.
The buzz about The Flash's quality has not just come from anonymous test screenings, as even DC Studios' chief James Gunn has constantly sung the movie's praises. He has actually taken the hype a step further than what has been reported before. According to Gunn, The Flash is one of the best superhero movies ever, regardless of if it was made by Marvel or DC. Another positive sign of how good The Flash must be is that James Gunn already has plans for director Andy Muschietti to play a part in the DC Universe's future. This was revealed during the DC Phase 1 slate announcement in early 2023, as Gunn teased that "he's going to be doing some more stuff for us." No other details were revealed about what Andy Muschietti is doing next for DC, but he would not already be locked in to be part of the DC Universe's future if Gunn and Safran were not happy with his work on The Flash, even if they had no direct involvement in the film.
There is now room for speculation about what DC Universe movie or TV show Andy Muschietti could be involved with after The Flash. His horror roots might have made him seem like a good fit for Swamp Thing, but James Mangold is already lined up for that film. It is possible that Muschietti is planning to direct Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. It is not confirmed that Supergirl will star Sasha Calle after The Flash, but this would be a more natural choice if the movie is envisioned as a continuation of Calle's character. Otherwise, The Flash 2 or a new Justice League movie could fit Muschietti.
The Flash Movie’s Writer Is Playing A Key Role In The DCU’s Future
James Gunn's affinity for those who worked on The Flash includes selecting writer Christina Hodson to play a key role in the franchise's future. Gunn and Safran have assembled a group of writers to be the Architects of the DC Universe to help write scripts and plan out stories years in advance. Christina Hodson's work on Birds of Prey and The Flash has landed her a spot on the committee, even after the Batgirl movie that used her script was canceled. She's joined by Gunn, DC Comics writer Tom King, Drew Goddard (Deadpool 2), Christal Henry (Watchmen), and Jeremy Slater (Moon Knight).
It is not yet confirmed what new DC Universe movies or shows Christina Hodson is writing after The Flash, but her key creative role in the franchise's future is another reason to be excited about her work here. Since she has some familiarity with writing for Batman, she could be tapped to write The Brave and the Bold's script, even if it will not include Ben Affleck or Michael Keaton's Batmen. She could also work on Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow with Tom King potentially. Obviously, The Flash's script has impressed DC Studios to keep Christina Hodson around in this capacity.
Ezra Miller’s Flash Return Chances Are Higher If The Movie Is A Hit
Reports that Ezra Miller's Flash could remain part of the DC Universe also make more sense if The Flash is incredible and likely to be a major hit. The star has been caught up in multiple controversies in recent years, but they have recently focused on getting help and improving their mental health. It would be quite easy for the DC Universe reset to include introducing a new version of Flash, but it seems that The Flash (and Miller's portrayal of Barry Allen) could be so good that DC Studios does not want to lose them.
This is obviously a risky move for the DC Universe, but recasting Flash right after The Flash becomes a hit would be confusing for audiences. If Miller plays a big enough role in the reason why the movie is deemed incredible, then the patience that James Gunn and Peter Safran have with the star will be more understandable. Of course, this is all dependent on them not getting into any more legal troubles or controversies. At the very least, The Flash's quality might mean DC takes a slower approach to figuring out Ezra Miller's future with the franchise and what role Flash will play going forward.
