Why Marvel May Not Be Able To Use Scarlet Witch's Best Villain Anymore
Because of The Runaways, Marvel may not be able to use Scarlet Witch’s best villain in WandaVision, or in any other Marvel project for that matter. Based on the character from the Arthurian stories, Morgan le Fay is an immortal Celtic sorceress who has tried on multiple occasions to take over the world. Among her enemies in Marvel Comics is the Scarlet Witch.
The Marvel version of Morgan le Fay has actually appeared in live-action twice. The first time was in the made-for-TV Doctor Strange movie, where she was played by Jessica Walter. Elizabeth Hurley was cast as the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Morgan le Fay for season 3 of the Hulu series Runaways, where she served as the main villain. Runaways’ Morgan le Fay was depicted as a sorceress trapped in the Dark Dimension (the home of Doctor Strange’s Dormammu). Over the course of the season, she escaped from the Dark Dimension, battled the Runways, and was eventually defeated.
Morgan le Fay would make the perfect villain for Disney+’s second MCU series, WandaVision. In fact, she fits in well with what is known about the show. WandaVision set photos that reveal Katherine Hahn’s mysterious villain show her dressed in attire that appears to be medieval, or perhaps from an even earlier era. It’s possible that they’re Celtic in origin. The prevailing theory is that Hahn is playing an evil version of Scarlet Witch’s comic book mentor, Agatha Harkness, even though her WandaVision character does bear a strong resemblance to Morgan le Fay.
Looking at Morgan le Fay’s history with Scarlet Witch in Marvel Comics, it would make more sense for her to be WandaVision’s villain – if it wasn’t for Runaways. The Runaways character didn’t die at the end of season 3 and technically could still be used again, but it’s hard to imagine WandaVision putting a considerable amount of focus on a villain from Runaways, a series that isn’t nearly as deeply connected to the larger MCU as the Disney+ shows will be. Instead, Marvel is more likely to use a new character.
That being said, Morgan le Fay would have offered a lot of fun possibilities for WandaVision, and potentially Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness as well (depending, of course, on how the two are linked). In the comics, Morgan and Wanda were at the center of a major Avengers story in the 1990s, called “Heroes Return”. Morgan discovered that Wanda was capable of altering reality and kidnapped her for her own purposes. She used Wanda to steal a magical weapon called the Twilight Sword and then remade the entire Marvel Universe. It would make sense for a character like her to have similar designs on the MCU’s Wanda, and her being an Arthurian figure would make her an even more interesting antagonist for Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch. All things considered, there is a possibility that Marvel can use Morgan le Fay, but for that to work, it would have to somehow retcon the Runaways version into a different character or an imposter of some sort.
