Why M3GAN 2 Isn't Being Rushed To Production After Viral Success
M3GAN producer Jason Blum explains why its sequel, M3GAN 2.0, is not being rushed to production despite the success of the first film. M3GAN was the first success of 2023, earning over $165.9 million worldwide over a $12 million budget and received stellar reviews from critics. The film currently sits at 94 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, and a sequel was quickly greenlit shortly after the original's release, with a release date of January 17, 2025.
Now, in an interview with Empire Online, Blum explained that while the success for M3GAN was considerable, the filmmakers will be taking their time for the sequel. He believes that the creative process suffers when a production is rushed, and with the original director and writer coming back, they have time to elevate the script before filming begins. "We’ve got to write a script. I mean, you’ve gotta give us a little bit of time. The creative process suffers when you [rush]. You pretend you’re not making compromises, but you always do. So I wanted to give us enough time to make the movie great, and we have that now. And we have the whole team coming back, we’re not having to hire a writer or director – all those people are in place."
How M3GAN's Success Can Influence M3GAN 2.0
While not much is currently known about M3GAN 2.0, the incredible success of M3GAN bodes well for the sequel in many ways. The film's meta-reference to current pop culture trends and self-aware humor made the movie an instant internet sensation when the first trailer came out, with some audience members calling its titular character an icon. A smart marketing campaign on social media, particularly on TikTok, paved the way for M3GAN's success at the box office, which was especially impressive considering that January's reputation isn't usually great in Hollywood history.
With M3GAN 2.0 taking time before the cameras roll, this could allow the filmmakers and producers to evaluate their strategy for the sequel.
