Why Game of Thrones Season 8 Angered Fans
Season 8 of Game of Thrones angered many viewers, and here are some of the top complaints. The hit HBO series is one of the most popular in recent memory, but the appreciation for Game of Thrones brought even more pressure on how it could end. All of these expectations are put on the shoulders of creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, as well as the various writers and directors on the eighth and final season.
Fans have known for a few years now that the eighth season of the series would be its last, but after spending so much time with the show and its characters, it can be difficult to let go. Each viewer has their own idea for how the story should come to an end, even if they are among the most casual of fans. On the flip side of the fandom, there are also those who have read all of the (currently released) novels by George R. R. Martin. These fans are not only judging the show for what it is doing, but also comparing it to how Martin could end it.
Unsurprisingly, the eighth season of Game of Thrones did not sit well with several viewers. What is somewhat surprising is that there are complaints on all sides of the fandom about a number of different topics. Among the multitude of criticisms that have come Game of Thrones' way, one of the most hotly debated was Daenerys Targaryen's vengeful turn in the final episodes. Many have contended that her fully committing to the Mad Queen side of her was properly set up and a true conclusion to her arc, but others have felt that it came out of left field on account of the writing and pacing of the final season. Those complaints go beyond just Daenerys, though, as the writing for Jon Snow, Tyrion Lannister, and Jaime Lannister was also criticized.
Even though the final season of Game of Thrones may not have gone the way many expected or wanted, the good news for those who felt that way is that they'll always have the previous seasons of the show to watch. If you were hoping for George R.R. Martin's final books to have a different ending, though, it doesn't sound like that will be the case. Bran becoming king is one of the story points he knew would happen, and he told the Game of Thrones team about this. But, hopefully, it will just be better executed in the books.
