What is the greatest ‘forgotten’ movie sequel you want to see

THESE are the forgotten trilogies, popular series where a third movie was always planned — but never filmed.

But which one are you missing? Which one did you most want to see made?

HELLBOY 3

THE news that Hellboy will be rebooted with Stranger Things’s David Harbour taking over from Ron Perlman as Hellboy brings to an end the hope that there would be a Hellboy 3.

After two pretty successful movies featuring the wise-cracking demon who works as a superhero, we were left hanging as to whether Hellboy would save or destroy the world.

They spent two movies setting up the big finale and then we never got it.

Sure, there were never lines of protesters wanting to see what happened but it always left you wanting more.

NATIONAL TREASURE 3

THESE were very enjoyable but rather underrated movies starring Nicolas Cage, who managed to tone down his often wacky acting style to provide some great entertainment for younger viewers.

For those who missed them, Cage plays a kind of low-brow Indiana Jones who rushes around finding out that conspiracy theories are true and there’s hidden treasure everywhere.

The end of the second movie left us with an intriguing line that there was some massive secret still to be discovered.

Something on page 47 of the Book Of Secrets (and I’m not kidding!).

Yet we never get to find out what. It’s not as if Disney is short of a few bucks or Cage is too busy. So where’s the finale?

KICK-ASS 3

THE first movie was a huge hit, featuring an incompetent “superhero” called Kick-Ass and his adventures with a potty-mouthed sidekick called Hit-Girl who was actually good at fighting bad guys.

The second movie was more of a flop, so the third comic book in the series, the one that tied up their stories, never got made.

There has been some talk of Netflix reviving it but nothing as yet.

28 MONTHS LATER

THE original, 28 Days Later, starring Cillian Murphy, was brilliant, a realistic look at how a zombie-style apocalypse could actually happen, with people infected by basically what is a mutated rabies virus and compelled to attack anything around them.

The sequel 28 Weeks Later took that further and there had been plenty of speculation that they would try a 28 Months Later to close the trilogy.

But it hasn’t happened. And that bites.

KILL BILL 3

YES, it was one movie that was too long and had to be stretched into two.

But Uma Thurman’s The Bride was too good a character not to bring back for a third Kill Bill.

Yes, she did kill Bill in the second one but that’s no impediment.

What has destroyed its chances is Thurman falling out with director Quentin Tarantino after he forced her to do a dangerous stunt that nearly killed her.

ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK 3

KURT Russell’s 1980s hero Snake Plissken was supposed to pull on the eye patch for a third outing, after getting out of New York and then Los Angeles.

The idea was to get even bigger, with Snake having to get out of a post-apocalyptic America or even off Earth itself.

But it never happened, which was a huge shame.

There has been talk of the series getting a reboot, although nothing concrete is out yet.

ALLEGIANT 2 (DIVERGENT 4)

AFTER initially promising so much, the film adaptations of the Divergent trilogy fell into a smoking ruin.

Shailene Woodley was supposed to be the next Jennifer Lawrence and her character Tris to be the next Katniss Everdeen of Hunger Games fame.

But it didn’t happen and slicing the third movie into two to cash in ended in dismal failure.

Now we’ll never know if they could have fixed up the wonky ending to the books that had fans in an uproar.

THE GOLDEN COMPASS

ANOTHER example of trying to take a beloved children’s fantasy trilogy and turn it into a film series.

Only The Golden Compass, despite having the likes of Nicole Kidman and Daniel Craig, flopped so badly that nothing more was done.

There is a brilliant series of films in Philip Pullman’s Dark Materials trilogy. It just needs someone to embrace its anti-church message as part of the tale.

TITANS 3

SAM Worthington rebooted the original Clash Of The Titans and followed it up with Wrath Of The Titans.

But that second movie was so bad that a third movie has been quietly dropped. Worthington was hamstrung by some dodgy effects but also admitted: “I think I can act f…..g better, to be honest.”

Still, the tale of Perseus is crying out to be finished off properly.

GHOSTBUSTERS 3

THE 1984 movie was a cult classic, while the 1989 sequel had fewer laughs and even more dodgy special effects.

The third movie was never made, sadly, and the death of Harold Ramis has ended any possibility of it — even if the female Ghostbusters reboot might have raised some hopes.

Still, the original was supposed to have Eddie Murphy and John Belushi and worked well, so perhaps there is a way to have a third one.
