What to Expect from Designated Survivor Season 3
Here's what you can expect from Designated Survivor season 3 on its new home at Netflix. The political thriller drama follows the ascent of Tom Kirkman, a Secretary of Housing and Urban Development who becomes the U.S. President after a deadly explosion.
Designated Survivor was created by David Guggenheim, the screenwriter of films like Safe House, Stolen, and the upcoming Bad Boys for Life. In the series, Kiefer Sutherland stars as Kirkman, with Natascha McElhone (Californication) portraying his wife Alex in the first two seasons, and McKenna Grace (Captain Marvel) co-starring as the couple’s daughter, Penny. Other series regulars include Adan Canto, Italia Ricci, Kal Penn, Maggie Q, and LaMonica Garrett.
In Designated Survivor season 2’s finale, President Kirkman addresses an earthquake crisis and announces that he’ll run for re-election as an Independent, just after special prosecutor Ethan West (Michael J. Fox) hands him a note. Here’s everything we know about Designated Survivor season 3.
DESIGNATED SURVIVOR SEASON 3 IS COMING TO NETFLIX
In May 2018, ABC canceled Designated Survivor, just days before the season 2 finale. The series’ ratings dropped significantly from season 1 to season 2, with viewership for the final 22 episodes showing a progressive decline. With that said, Designated Survivor season 1 was named the Most Exciting TV Series by TV Guide in 2016, and season 2 created buzz thanks to the collective performances.
However, in September Netflix stepped in and renewed Designated Survivor for season 3, now branded as a Netflix Original.
WHEN WILL DESIGNATED SURVIVOR SEASON 3 RELEASE?
As Designated Survivor is new to Netflix, it's hard to predict when they may premiere season 3. The production wrapped in early February, so a release date in Summer or Fall 2019 is likely. Given how it used to be a network staple, we expect Designated Survivor season 3 to release around September.

Designated Survivor’s cryptic season 2 finale received polarizing reactions, and with good reason given the series' uncertain future. In anticipation of Designated Survivor season 3, Netflix has already released a synopsis, one that suggests President Kirkman will address even more internal conflict now that his wife has passed away and his son is leaving for college.
