Unforgivable Trailer: Sandra Bullock Is An Ex-Con Looking for Her Sister
Netflix unveils the first trailer for The Unforgivable starring Sandra Bullock as an ex-con trying to be reunited with her younger sister. The film is based on the 2009 British miniseries Unforgiven from Sally Wainwright and centers on Ruth Slater, a woman released from prison after serving a sentence for a violent crime who tries to seek redemption from her hometown and find her estranged sister she was forced to leave behind. Bullock leads the ensemble cast that also includes Viola Davis, Aisling Franciosi, Rob Morgan, Vincent D'Onofrio, Jon Bernthal, Richard Thomas, Linda Edmond and Emma Nelson.
Development on the film has been in the works for over a decade when Graham King first acquired the rights to the miniseries with Christopher McQuarrie set to write the screenplay and Angelina Jolie set to star. Logan scribe Scott Frank would be hired to rewrite and direct the script while McQuarrie was busy with Jack Reacher, only for the latter to return to the fold in 2013 and no progress be made until late 2019 when Bullock signed on to star and produce. Nora Fingscheidt would replace McQuarrie as director while The Batman's Peter Craig, Hillary Seitz and Courtenay Miles would co-write a new draft of the script.
A year after wrapping production on the film, Netflix has released the first official trailer for The Unforgivable. The video sees Sandra Bullock's ex-con Ruth as she looks to reunite with her estranged sister while society pushes back against her. Check out the trailer below:
Despite having taken a decade to finally get off the ground, the first trailer for The Unforgiven certainly looks to be fairly worth the wait. While Bullock has played some down-on-their-luck characters in her career, the role of Ruth certainly looks to be a more against-type character for the Oscar winner, namely in the mysterious violent crime she was sent to prison for in the story. The trailer does see her character called a cop killer and brief glimpses of W. Earl Brown's Mac Whelan seemingly attacked by Ruth, though other shots from the video leaves the exact nature of the crime up in the air.
The Unforgiven marks an interesting new chapter for Bullock as she expands her working relationship with Netflix following the success of 2018's Bird Box. In addition to the drama, Bullock is currently set to produce and potentially star in Chris McKay's adaptation of Millarworld's Reborn at the streaming platform. While fans await word on the comic book adaptation, audiences can look forward to seeing Bullock in an Oscar hopeful role when The Unforgiven hits select theaters on November 24 followed by Netflix on December 10.
