Stuber International Trailer: Nanjiani & Bautista Bring on the Laughs
Fox has released an international trailer for its action-comedy Stuber, starring Kumail Nanjiani and Dave Bautista. Both actors have become bigger names over the past five years, thanks to their work on the big and small screen alike. Nanjiani, in particular, broke out thanks to his role in HBO's hit comedy series Silicon Valley, and has since landed an Oscar nomination for cowriting The Big Sick (which he also starred in). Similarly, Bautista has gone from being a WWE wrestling icon to a full-fledged movie star of late, beginning with his turn as Drax in Guardians of the Galaxy.
As such, it's fitting the pair are joining forces on the anticipated Stuber this summer. The film stars Nanjiani as Stu, a mild-mannered Uber driver who gets pulled into a wild night of adventure when he's hired to drive Vic (Bautista), a detective hot on the trail of a dangerous criminal. It's been generating positive buzz since an in-progress version of the movie screened at SXSW in March, and has since kicked its marketing campaign fully into gear, in the lead-up to today's trailer launch.
As "Trailer Tuesday" continues, Fox has gone and released an international trailer for Stuber online. The preview isn't too different from the U.S. promo that dropped last month, but includes some brand-new footage all the same. Take a look in the space below.
Written by Tripper Clancy (Four Against the Bank) and directed by Michael Dowse (Goon), Stuber has been compared to 1980s and '90s buddy action-comedies like Lethal Weapon and Rush Hour in its early reviews. The trailers give off a similar vibe, as they show poor Stu getting pulled into all manner of comically danger situations against his will by Vic, before the pair ultimately start working together more to try and save the day. It's a pretty basic premise (two very different people are stuck together on an adventure), but one that should play to its leads' strengths as comedic actors. Indeed, the international trailer along includes a number of chuckle-worthy moments, and even offers a decent explanation for why Vic needs an Uber driver to begin with.
Dowse, for his part, already has a bit of a cult following thanks to his work on zany comedies like Goon and What If (not to mention, the comedy series Man Seeking Woman), and Stuber seems like something in his wheelhouse. The movie opens in theaters a week after Spider-Man: Far From Home arrives, but its surefire R-rating should help set it apart from the web-slinger's more family-oriented adventure. And with survival horror-thriller Crawl being the only other new wide release that weekend, there's a good chance audiences in the mood for a laugh will turn to Nanjiani and Bautista to get the job done.
