Steven Spielberg Producing Horror Film Starring Finn Wolfhard
According to reports, Steven Spielberg is currently in Ireland overseeing the filming of one of his latest projects called The Turning, and it’s a horror film starring Stanger Things alum Finn Wolfhard. The hard-working filmmaker is acting as executive producer on the movie, but is already turning heads in the country with his presence and the intense secrecy that is surrounding the production of the film.
As a filmmaker, Spielberg is currently riding off the back of a number of critically-praised films such as The Post and Lincoln, and has the much anticipated Ready Player One due for release shortly. But he has also been incredibly prolific as a producer as well, with a number of upcoming projects like Bumblebee and Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom currently listing his name on the credits. However with The Turning, he seems to be taking a special interest in the shooting and has flown to the set, where he has ensured that plenty of security measures are in place and he is present for some of the daily shoots.

According to a local report detailed in Independent.ie, The Turning is currently filming in the lush county of Wicklow, which is south of Dublin and in the east of Ireland. The bulk of the shoot is said to be taking place in the plush Kilruddery Estate complete with a mansion, where most of the story is expected to take place. Spielberg has reportedly got all the crew to sign non-disclosure agreements and nobody is allowed near the set without the correct clearance. Despite all this, the film is known to be a modern take on the classic Henry James’ ghost story The Turn of the Screw. The story has been previously filmed as The Innocents with Deborah Kerr in 1961, which is thought to contain some of the most unsettling horror movie ghosts by many. The plot in this case sees a young woman being hired by a man to take care of his niece and nephew following the deaths of their parents, with some appropriately spooky incidents then occurring.
Whilst it’s Spielberg attracting attention on the set, the movie is actually being directed by Floria Sigismondi, who previously filmed episodes of The Handmaid’s Tale and American Gods, as well as numerous music videos. The cast is notably strong as well. Joining Wolfhard is Mackenzie Davis (Blade Runner 2049 and Black Mirror) as the female lead, and young Brooklynn Prince, who made a big impact in The Florida Project. With such a strong cast and crew, and such rich source material, this could well be a classic chiller if all the ingredients come together.
The Irish film community has an affectionate history with Spielberg, given that he shot key sequences from Saving Private Ryan in the country, and once flew to Wicklow to take Daniel Day Lewis on a ‘pub crawl’ to convince him to take on the leading role of Lincoln. This is probably why the local press has picked up on his appearance with such excitement. The remarkably lush countryside and the gothic buildings chosen here should also provide excellent backdrops for this horror flick, and a possible genre highlight for next year.
The Turning should be released sometime during 2019.
