Star Trek: Picard's executive producer Terry Matalas reveals that the show's third season won't just be a Star Trek: The Next Generation reunion, but will also tie into Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Star Trek: Voyager. Star Trek: Picard season 3 is set to premiere on February 23, 2023. While the show has previously explored Jean-Luc Picard's (Patrick Stewart) post-retirement life, its third season will be welcoming back many faces from Star Trek history. Michael Dorn, Daniel Davis, and LeVar Burton are just a few characters set to reprise their Star Trek roles for the first time since the early 2000s.

In an interview with Den of Geek, Matalas revealed that Star Trek: Picard will also tie into Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Star Trek: Voyager. Before his interview, it was well known that season 3 was going to be a Star Trek: The Next Generation reunion that would see the original USS Enterprise gang together again. However, Matalas has now revealed that the season will dive even deeper into Star Trek history by connecting it to several major Star Trek: Deep Space Nine events. Check out Matalas' quote below:

"I think that it’s important to Deep Space Nine fans to feel seen. It’s [Star Trek: Picard] a continuation of Voyager too, of course, with Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan) in our show. If you’re going to be in this time period, there’s such a rich opportunity to honor what came before."
How Picard Will Continue Other Star Trek Shows

While Matalas did not give many details on how Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Star Trek: Voyager will play into Star Trek: Picard, he did indicate that the third season will be a continuation of those storylines. Following in the tradition of Star Trek: The Next Generation, each of these shows ran for seven seasons. This season length became standard for many live-action Star Trek series and, while it means that they ended on their own terms, it also means that there was a limit to just how fully they could conclude a culmination of seven seasons of events. As a result, there are many unresolved and unanswered plot lines and questions in these Star Trek shows.

Star Trek: Picard can continue the franchise's older shows by answering or addressing some of these questions. For example, the show can delve into Worf's tragic past as a Klingon warrior and how he overcame the many losses he suffered in Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. Additionally, the show can also answer the mystery of Seven of Nine and how she became a Starfleet Commander despite Starfleet's previous discrimination against Borgs.

Meanwhile, there will be plenty of other returning characters whose histories can be further probed, too. Quite a bit of time has passed since any of these characters have appeared in a Star Trek story, so many loose ends can be tied up. Season 3 of Star Trek: Picard can explain where all of these characters have been, what has changed in their lives since viewers last saw them, and what could be their satisfying conclusion. Early on, the show was largely a means to explore Picard coming to terms with his past and making peace with it. It is only fitting that characters from Star Trek's other shows also get this final development. Star Trek: Picard will see the continuation of several shows from Star Trek's history as it will revisit some of their major characters and reveal what directions their lives ultimately took.
