Sony Sets Release Dates for Zombieland 2 & Bloodshot, Removes The Crow
Sony has updated its release slate, setting official dates for Zombieland 2, Bloodshot, and Greta Gerwig's Little Women and removing The Crow reboot from its docket. The perennially delayed Crow franchise relaunch lost its latest would-be star (Jason Momoa) and director (Corin Hardy) back in May, so it only makes sense for the studio to remove the project from its official lineup altogether for the time being. Its previous October 2019 spot is now being filled by the Zombieland sequel, which will be hitting theaters in time to commemorate the first Zombieland's 10-year anniversary.
The studio has further tweaked the release dates for a handful of upcoming films by as little as a week to as much as three weeks. That includes two fast-approaching August 2018 releases, in the forms of Aneesh Chaganty's visually experimental mystery/thriller Searching and Sylvain White big screen take on the Slender Man viral sensation. Sony has also gone and shifted Quentin Tarantino's 1960s Los Angeles-set film Once Upon a Time in Hollywood up a little from its original August 2019 launch pad.
As it stands, Zombieland 2 is now set to hit theaters on October 11, 2019, followed by Little Women on December 25 later that year. Bloodshot will arrive on the scene a few months after Gerwig's literary adaptation and is now scheduled to go into wide release starting February 21, 2020. Meanwhile, Slender Man is now set to being playing in U.S. theaters next month on August 10 instead of the 24th and Searching has been pushed back to a limited release on August 24, followed by an expansion wide a week later on the 31st.
Zombieland 2 may have its work cut for it at the box office, seeing as it's currently set to open against four other wide releases, including Dwayne Johnson's Jungle Cruise movie. Little Women will also have to do battle with several big films when it arrives over the 2019 winter holiday frame (Star Wars: Episode IX among them), but odds are it will start out in a limited release and gradually expand to more markets over the course of the 2020 awards season. As for Bloodshot: the Vin Diesel-led comic book movie has its February date all to itself, for the moment.
Sony's date changes for Searching and Slender Man are unexpected by comparison, all the more so in light of reports that the latter is searching for a new distributor. White's horror film is now set to open against the buzzed-about giant shark thriller The Meg in a box office battle that it will most likely lose. Last, but not least, Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is now set to hit theaters on July 26 (rather than August 9) next year and has the day all to itself right now. The movie should benefit its commercial prospects, for that same reason.
