Solo: A Star Wars Story’s Villain Speaks In New International Trailer
The first bits of dialogue from Solo: A Star Wars Story villain Dryden Vos are revealed in a new international trailer for the spinoff. To date, much of the attention in marketing has been given to the heroes of the piece – mainly the trio of Han, Chewbacca, and Lando Calrissian. However, a little light has been shed on the antagonists so far. While there are all kinds of mysteries surrounding the helmeted Enfys Nest (from the gender to the actor playing the character), Lucasfilm has been far more open about crime boss Dryden Vos, the “big shot gangster” who wants to rob the Conveyex. Originally portrayed by Micheal K. Williams, scheduling conflicts with the reshoots dictated Paul Bettany take over the role.
Dryden has been visible in advertising so far, appearing in tie-in merchandise, TV spots, and trailers. But with the focus being on the familiar faces, audiences have yet to hear him speak. That changes today, as the character says some lines (albeit dubbed in German) in a foreign preview that you can watch in the space above.
Most of the footage in the trailer is recycled from previous marketing materials, and follows a similar structure to the full domestic preview. That said, there are a handful of new shots – the most prominent of which involve Dryden. Though the entire trailer is in German, Star Wars News Net provided an English translation of Vos’ lines. First, in a scene where Dryden appears to be meeting with Tobias Beckett and Han, he says, “Give me a reason not to kill you.” Towards the end, as Vos wields his weapon, he threatens someone offscreen with, “You will have to be careful for the rest of your life.” These are fittingly evil lines for a Star Wars villain and indicate Dryden is someone not to be trifled with.
Dryden should prove to be one of the more interesting figures in Solo. When discussing the project after he left, Williams described the kingpin as a link between Han and Emilia Clarke’s Qi’ra, which raises numerous questions about that particular dynamic. Longtime friends who grew up together on the streets of Corellia, it’s assumed Han and Qi’ra go on their separate paths in Solo before being reunited later in the film. Perhaps while Han finds himself under the wing of Beckett, Qi’ra becomes aligned with Dryden and fate has their paths cross. Qi’ra definitely looks at home in Dryden’s extravagant den (see: her outfit compared to Han and Beckett’s), but it’s difficult to say for sure if that’s how things play out. Plot specifics remain hard to come by.
If Qi’ra is a close associate of Dryden, it arguably makes the odds of her being a secret villain greater. The Solo trailers haven’t been shy about teasing viewers with an impending betrayal, and Qi’ra is a likely candidate for that role. If the prequel deals with the idealistic Han transforming into a cynical rogue, few things would shake the smuggler more than being backstabbed by someone he thought he could trust. Qi’ra has been called the movie’s femme fatale, and anyone with a passing knowledge of the trope knows they can’t always be trusted.
