Scream 6 Box Office Reaches Franchise Milestone Not Hit Since Scream 2
Scream 6 continues its impressive box office run, hitting a domestic milestone that hasn't been hit since Scream 2 26 years ago. Released last month to mostly positive reviews, Scream 6 sees Sam (Melissa Barrera) and Tara (Jenna Ortega) face off against a new Ghostface killer in New York City. The hit sequel earned $44.5 million during its opening weekend run, exceeding expectations and setting a new opening weekend franchise record.
Now, as per Variety, Scream 6's box office has now hit a new milestone, crossing the $100 million mark domestically. This feat was last accomplished by the franchise with Wes Craven's Scream 2 back in 1997, which ended its run at $101 million. In the coming days, the latest sequel is also expected to beat the 1996 original, which remains the highest-grossing installment of the franchise in North America. Internationally, however, Scream 6 stands at $156 million, putting it well behind the first two movies, which stand at $173 million and $172 million, respectively.
What Scream 6's Box Office Means For The Franchise's Future
Last year's legacy sequel was a surprise success at the box office, and Paramount gave the green light to a sequel after only a few weeks. Scream 6 hit theaters on March 10 and has been even more successful than its predecessor, meaning it's certainly possible that a Scream 7 announcement is imminent. Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, who have directed both of the most recent installments, have already expressed interest in continuing to work on the franchise.
Although there hasn't been an official announcement just yet, it seems likely that Scream 7 will be announced in the coming weeks. The franchise, after all, has seen a clear resurgence in popularity. It's less clear, however, what a seventh movie would be about. Scream 6 is the first movie to not feature Sidney Prescott, with franchise star Neve Campbell opting not to return due to a salary dispute. It's possible that Scream 6's success without her will serve as a signal that future franchise entries don't need Sidney in order to thrive.
That being said, both last year's entry and Scream 6 serve as a passing of the baton to a new generation of characters anyway. While the three main legacy characters, including David Arquette's Dewey and Courteney Cox's Gale, played a prominent role in the previous movie, Scream 6 puts the focus much more on Sam, Tara, Mindy (Jasmin Savoy Brown), and Chad (Mason Gooding). It remains to be seen whether another sequel will get the green light, but the new "Core Four" group of characters will evidently play a key role in whatever Ghostface adventures are to come.
