Regina King Suits Up In Mysterious New Watchmen Videos
HBO generates more intrigue around its upcoming Watchmen series with three videos showing Regina King’s costumed character suiting up. The new series has been teasing audiences for months with Instagram videos, trailers, and the occasional promotional image, for what creator and showrunner Damon Lindelof has described as a “remix” of the classic comic book story from Alan Moore and David Gibbons. From the look of what’s been released so far, it would seem as though Lindleof’s “remix” will spin out something very interesting indeed.
Though HBO hasn’t been exactly shy about marketing the new series — there have been plenty of clips showing not only King but also Jeremy Irons and Don Johnson, as well as many, many masked individuals, including an army of Rorschachs — it’s still somewhat difficult to get a read on what the series is going to actually be like. While the premiere is expected later this year, it would seem HBO is going to keep playing things (somewhat) close to the vest with regard to its marketing approach.
That much is fairly evident with the new Instagram videos the series’s official account posted earlier. Watched together they show King’s Angela Abar donning her masked get-up as well as her badge, the dichotomy of which seems to be one of the show’s primary points of interest. Though they don’t reveal anything about Abar as a person or the overarching story of Watchmen itself, the videos do show how King’s character getting into character will likely be a major component of the series. And that’s a good thing, as the Emmy and Academy Award-winner has not only been on a hot streak as of late, but she was also one of the best things about Lindelof’s last HBO series, The Leftovers.
While fans will have to wait a while longer for a full Watchmen trailer, much less the series itself, these little Instagram videos are doing their part to build anticipation for the series and Lindelof’s take on one of the best comic book stories every written.
Watchmen is expected on HBO in 2019.
