Quesion about usenet n' more.

Hello people! :-)

First of all i've some questions about a program (or whatever it is) called: usenet. What's usenet? How can i get access to the program? Will it cost a lot of money? Because.. the bottom line is i've been searching for a TV program (documentary) sent on Discovery Channel called: "The man who doesn't breathe" about the danish diver: Stig Severinsen who breaks a lot of records under water! I've been able to find the episodes (There's two episodes) on a Chinese website with Chinese speak and subtitles - but.. i don't understand a shit of it I don't know were else to post this thread so.. i tried my luck in here :-) Hope someone can Help me with "usenet" n' to get access to the episodes of The man who doesn't breathe.

Usenet is a distributed discussion system. It is quite old (70s) and it is not very famous now because it has a steep learning curve in the beginning. If your main interest is download content, there is an advantage. You download the files directly from your usenet service so it is faster than a torrent. But to get access to the network you need to pay for it.

Giganews, astraweb and usenext are the most famous Usenet services.
Here you can take a look to the prices.

And then you would need a client to connect to your service. SABnzbd is multiplatform and works quite well. For MacOS you have Hellanzb and for Windows Altbinz.

Now that you've got access to Usenet, and the right tools to draw those sweet, sweet files from it, it's time to dive in. Since Usenet in the raw is an incomprehensible mess, something has emerged called the Newzbin, or NZB standard. NZBs are a lot like torrent files: They're little pointers that contain information about all the little scattered pieces of a given download, and which give clients like SABnzbd everything they need to make downloading look seamless to users.

To "explore Usenet" is really to explore indexes of NZBs, and to do that, you need a good search engine. The best is at Newzbin, from the people who invented the NZB format. Unfortunately, it too is paid, and currently invite-only. Instead, you should use one of the decent free alternatives, like NZBs.org, Binsearch or Newszleech.

If you like technology like me maybe you can give it a try but otherwise in my humble opinion you should better use torrents.
