Quentin Tarantino Had An Intense Reaction To Luca Guadagnino’s Suspiria
After watching Luca Guadagnino's remake of Dario Argento's seminal horror classic Suspiria, Quentin Tarantino had an intense reaction. Guadagnino screened his movie for Taraninto, and his response was exactly what the Call Me By Your Name director hoped for: deeply emotional.
Based on the original 1977 horror movie from Dario Argento, Guadagnino's Suspiria tells the story of a young dancer named Susie Bannion (Dakota Johnson) who becomes roped into the twisted - and violent - world of an esteemed ballet school. Under the tutelage of Madame Blanc (Tilda Swinton), Susie quickly discovers that there is something unnaturally sinister brewing within the walls of the school and eventually discovers its dark secrets. Also starring Chloë Grace Moretz, Mia Goth, and Jessica Harper (who starred as the lead in the original movie), Suspiria recently earned official praise from two-time Academy Academy Award winner Quentin Tarantino, whose strong emotional reaction was exactly the sort of response that Guadagnino was aiming for.
Speaking with IndieWire, Guadagnino revealed that he had screened the movie for Tarantino after the two became friends while serving as judges at the Venice Film Festival. He explained that he was excited to see what Taraninto's reaction would be, especially given the fact that Tarantino seemed enthusiastic about watching it. After the private screening, Guadagnino said that Tarantino was not only crying, but ended up hugging him. He added that even though Suspiria is a horror movie, he hopes that its underlining melodrama will affect audiences in ways that other horror movies may not - and Taraninto's reaction was exactly what he was hoping for. He said:

“I was nervous but eager to hear his advice. We saw it at his place and his reaction warmed me. He was enthusiastic about it, in the end he was crying and hugged me. Because it’s a horror movie but also a melodrama, my goal was to make you look at the horror without being able to take [your eyes off the screen] because you’re captivated by the characters."
In fact, Tarantino isn't the only person who left the movie with a positive reaction. Chloë Grace Moretz, who stars in the movie as a character named Patricia Hingle - a character who uncovers the dark secrets of the dance academy well before Susie - compared the remake to Stanley Kubrick's adaptation of The Shining, saying that "there’s nothing like it that you will ever see.”
While positive responses to horror movies tend to be very touch-and-go with critics, the horror genre has had a healthy renaissance recently thanks to the success of Jordan Peele's Get Out. Earning several Academy Award nominations, as well as earning Peele the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay, Get Out may have ushered in a new wave of respect for horror movies. Alongside well-received movies horror movies like A Quiet Place and Hereditary, Suspiria may well be one of three movies in this 2018-horror trifecta that has a shot at serious awards consideration by the end of the year.
