Hulu unveils the first Prey trailer revealing an August release date for the next installment in the Predator franchise and its prequel setting. The new sci-fi action film will shift the focus back to the 1700s and center on Naru, a Comanche warrior who finds herself pitted against a Predator visiting Earth and must rise up against traditions to protect her tribe from the alien threat. Legion star Amber Midthunder is leading the cast of Prey as Naru alongside Dane DiLiegro and Dakota Beavers.

Development on Prey first began in secret while Shane Black's The Predator was in production with 10 Cloverfield Lane director Dan Trachtenberg approaching franchise producer John Davis with the idea for a new story with a writer. Production kicked off on the film in early 2021 under the code name Skulls, which was originally intended to keep the film's Predator ties a secret until its release, and would wrap in September the same year. With Prey set for a Summer 2022 release, audiences are finally getting the first glimpse at what's to come from the next Predator outing.

Over nine months after having wrapped production, Hulu has released the first Prey trailer. The video offers the first look at the new Predator movie, teasing its Comanche main character, past setting and an August release date for the film. Check out the pulse-pounding teaser below:

While the Prey trailer may not reveal much about the story of the new Predator film, it should help establish some anticipation for the new installment in the long-running franchise. With minimal audio included in the trailer, viewers are thrown right into the action as Amber Midthunder's Naru flees an unknown force through the Great Plains, seemingly saved by an unnamed fellow tribe member. The force is quickly revealed to be a Predator thanks to the iconic triangle laser sights set on his head and the clicking growl emanating from the background.

The biggest question the Prey trailer is sure to raise is whether the film will be adhering to an R-rating as with almost all of its predecessors or whether it will go for a PG-13 rating as producer John Davis previously teased. Given the rocky road the Predator franchise has endured since the fan-favorite Arnold Schwarzenegger led premiere movie, it wold be a questionable choice for the film to tone down its content, namely as it will no longer be relying on box office numbers to be a success with its Hulu exclusive release plan. However, with 20th Century Studios exec Steve Asbell teasing the film is a big creative swing for the franchise and Trachtenberg citing God of War as a key inspiration for the film, one can hope for some R-rated action when Prey hits Hulu on August 5.
