Our Planet Trailer: Netflix Offers A Nature Documentary On A Truly Global Scale
One of the most truly reliable sources of entertainment (edutainment?) is the venerable nature documentary, which Netflix is prepared to deliver with the official trailer for the ambitious looking Our Planet series. Following in the footsteps of the BBC’s acclaimed Planet Earth and Blue Planet, this new series explores the many wonders of the natural world, focusing on the ways in which the planet is constantly changing and how that impacts the spectacular — and in some cases, spectacularly large — creatures who inhabit it.
These series have become something of an event in their own right, with Blue Planet II being one of the most beautiful things on television in 2018. And while that series was a feat of documentary filmmaking like no other, it would seem as though Netflix has something even grander in scale coming with the premiere of Our Planet. From the opening moments of the trailer it’s clear who this new series is coming from, especially once the calming, erudite tones of Sir David Attenborough begin narrating the breathtaking cinematography.
Obviously the series’ global approach to nature documentary isn’t just in the title alone, as the nearly two minute-long trailer manages to circumnavigate the globe and get up close and personal with some rather amazing creatures. Netflix and the show’s producers seem to know what they have on their hands, as the marketing for Our Planet isn’t exactly shy about using the amazing footage of whales to demonstrate just how this show will stand out from the rest of the pack. The series will be similar to Blue Planet II in many ways, as while it’s goal is to entertain with “never-before-seen footage of wildlife and their habitats,” it will also take time to focus on the growing concerns of conservation and the impact humankind is having on these creatures and the rest of the natural world. Additionally, the series will follow in the footsteps of its ostensible predecessor by pulling back the curtain, so to speak, to show viewers just what a monumental undertaking a series like this is, devoting time to behind-the-scenes footage of filmmakers braving the often harsh elements to procure some of the most gorgeous nature photography on TV.
As an added incentive to binge, Netflix is presenting the series in all its 4K glory (with Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos for those who have it), meaning Our Planet has all the ingredients to be one of the best looking nature documentaries ever made. The series will arrive in early April, so add it to your Netflix queue now.
