New set photos from The Old Guard 2 offer the first look at the movie's returning cast and a new character. Based on Greg Rucka's comic book of the same name, The Old Guard is Netflix's superhero saga that centers on a group of immortal mercenaries with regenerative healing powers. Starring Charlize Theron, KiKi Layne, Matthias Schoenaerts, Marwan Kenzari, Luca Marinelli, Harry Melling, Veronica Ngo, and Chiwetel Ejiofor, the first movie premiered in July 2020, with critics praising its knockout action sequences, inclusive storytelling, and subversive take on the superhero genre.

The original cast was keen to reprise their roles even before The Old Guard 2 was officially announced. Rucka, who also wrote the first movie's screenplay, had a good idea for a sequel, and it's being suggested that The Old Guard 2 will be based on his second graphic novel, The Old Guard: Force Multiplied. One significant change the sequel will see from the first film is that Lovecraft Country director Victoria Mahoney has replaced director Gina Prince-Bythewood. The Old Guard 2 production made a significant step forward as a new image from the movie's location indicates that filming is now well underway.

The film's star, Charlize Theron, shared some new set photos from The Old Guard 2. In one image, the actress shares banter with returning castmates, Layne, Marinelli, Kenzari, and Ejiofor, while in another photo, she is posing alongside her costars and director. The second image also offers a good look at a stubbled Henry Golding. As announced, the Crazy Rich Asians star has joined the upcoming sequel as a brand new character. The details of his role, however, remain undisclosed. Take a look at the new images below.

Notably missing from the set photos is newcomer Uma Thurman, who had joined The Old Guard 2 at the same time as Golding. Additionally, Schoenaerts and Ngo aren't in the set photos either, but it doesn't necessarily mean they wouldn't show up in the sequel. Thurman and Schoenaerts weren't shooting when the photo in question was taken, which is why they aren't in the picture. Ngo's return for The Old Guard 2 has already been officially confirmed. While details about Thurman's role remain unclear, Schoenaerts and Ngo's characters are expected to join forces in the sequel.

In The Old Guard, After Booker (Schoenaerts) betrayed Amy (Theron), he was sentenced to century-long isolation by the group. But he does not end up staying alone, as in the movie's final moments, Quynh (Ngo) discovers him. At the moment, it's not clear how the new team-up between Booker and Quynh will pan out heading into the sequel. But considering the original movie's cliffhanger ending, the duo may cause trouble for the mercenaries in The Old Guard 2.

Right now, it's hard to predict what character Golding plays in The Old Guard 2. But considering the actor's presence in the set photo, it's likely that he will be seen as another immortal who will join Andy and her group on their missions. Golding brings a demonstrated action credibility to the movie after his intense martial arts training for G.I. Joe. If he is indeed playing another combatant, his character will make for a powerful pair-up with Andy and the group, who are down a member after Booker's deception. More details about The Old Guard 2 will become clear when subsequent set photos and videos surface.
