Netflix’s Vikings: Valhalla First Look Reveals A New Era of Warriors
Netflix has just released a first look at the upcoming series, Vikings: Valhalla, a spinoff of Vikings (2013-2020), the popular sword-and-shield History Channel series that ended in December. Vikings ran for six seasons, and centered on Ragnar Lothbrok (Travis Fimmel), his family, and his band of Viking brothers, as he rose to become King of the Viking tribes.
Vikings: Valhalla takes place 100 years after the events at the conclusion of Vikings, and explores the end of the Viking age in the 11th century. The story chronicles the adventures of Leif Eriksson (Sam Corlett), Freydis Eriksdotter (Frida Gustavsson), Herald Hardrada, and the Norman King William the Conqueror — some of the most famous Vikings ever, as they fight for survival. Vikings creator, Michael Hirst, is returning to executive produce the new action-packed series, which is produced by MGM Television. Jeb Stuart is set to serve as showrunner and writer for the confirmed 24 episodes. His screen credits include Die Hard (1988), The Fugitive (1993), and the Netflix mini-series, The Liberator (2020).
Now, Netflix has released the first look trailer, which introduces viewers to Leif Eriksson, a young sailor who has captained his boat all the way from Greenland. It is clear that Leif is looking to make his mark in this new edition of the Vikings legend. The next character introduced in the teaser is Freydis Eriksdotter, a young woman who informs the viewer that “Change is happening.” As one would expect, there are images of ships at sea, swords, and warriors in battle. The dark landscapes and moody score give viewers the foreboding feeling that the world of the Vikings is on the verge of monumental change. Despite all of the uncertainty, though, it is clear that these new Vikings are determined to prevail. The tagline is “Now is our time to make history.” Check out the trailer below:
After the sixth and final season of Vikings ended, fans were understandably disappointed as there were few alternatives that satisfied their needs for battle and glory. Travis Fimmel’s Ragnar left such a strong imprint in the minds of viewers that Sam Corlett’s Leif will have big shoes to fill. But viewers will likely feel the legacy of Ragnar in the ideologies and temperaments of the new characters, even though the new series takes place in a different time.
Valhalla may not supersede the scale of the armies and big battles in the final episodes of Vikings, but the return of the original creative team means that fans can look forward to new stories that are in the vein of the original series. A release date for Vikings: Valhalla has not been announced, so fans will have to wait for more information. Still, this teaser is evidence that Valhalla will likely live up to the superb action and drama that Vikings consistently delivered.
