Netflix's Umbrella Academy Poster Offers First Look At The Family
Netflix has officially released the first teaser poster for the upcoming original series The Umbrella Academy. The newest piece of promotional material reveals the first (albeit obscured) look at the family and gives viewers more insight as to who they can expect to see once the series premieres.
The Umbrella Academy was originally a comic book series created by Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá and published by Dark Horse Comics in 2007. The story follows a dysfunctional family of superheroes who band together to solve their father’s death and fend off the apocalypse. While the comic book series was first optioned by Universal Studios for a film, production seemed somewhat rocky and details regarding a release date were not confirmed. In 2015, it was announced that The Umbrella Academy would instead be developed as a television series, with Netflix greenlighting the adaptation in 2017. With more exclusive snippets of production being released by the studio and by Way himself, fans have eagerly been awaiting the further development of the series.
Yesterday, audiences got what they have been waiting for. On one of Netflix’s official Twitter accounts, the streaming platform released the first look at the official teaser poster, which showcases the characters in question. The first piece of promotional marketing doesn’t give away all that many details in regards to the series itself, but it does indicate when audiences can expect to see its premiere and which stars will be making an appearance. The art showcases the principal cast members who together will form the main family that the story is focused on. Though the 10-episode order was ideally going to be released in 2018, the latest tweet confirms that it will debut in 2019 instead.
The poster shows the various cast members posing with the iconic umbrella partially obscuring their faces and it seems that viewers can expect quite the magnitude of talent to be showcased throughout the series. The latest material reveals Tom Hopper as Luther, David Castaneda as Diego, Emmy Raver-Lampman as Allison, Ellen Page as Vanya, Robert Sheehan as Klaus, and Aidan Gallagher as Number Five. It has also been confirmed that the likes of Mary J. Blige and Colm Feore will star as original characters.
After it was confirmed that Netflix would be distributing and producing the original series, it was announced that Jeremy Slater - who’s known for his work on films such as Death Note - will be writing the pilot script, with Steve Blackman (Fargo) acting as the general showrunner. Blackman will also take the role of executive producer alongside Gerard Way, Mike Richardson, and Keith Goldberg.
The development of the comic book series becoming either a film or a television series has been talked about for quite some time now, so it’s going to be exciting for viewers to finally get further confirmation of when to expect the adaptation. Long-time fans of Way, the former front-man for the rock band My Chemical Romance, will undoubtedly be eagerly awaiting this latest development in his creative career. Though, it’s not unlikely to expect the series to attract an influx of new fans as a result of its premiere, especially with the likes of the cast members involved.
Details regarding The Umbrella Academy series are still very much under wraps, but filming was confirmed to have begun in January 2018 in Toronto. So far, it’s said that the series will adapt the first storyline showcased throughout the multiple-part comic books.
The Umbrella Academy premieres on Netflix in 2019.
