The Matrix 4 Director Has A Meta Explanation For Why The Movie Exists
The Matrix Resurrections has a meta answer for why co-creator Lana Wachowski felt compelled to return to the franchise with a new story to tell. The film will be the fourth installment in the Matrix series, following the original trilogy as a direct sequel rather than a reboot. The Matrix Resurrections is scheduled to hit theatres around Christmas, and with little known about the film's plot, it comes highly anticipated.
As the film isn't a reboot, it will be bringing back old faces and introducing fans of the series to new ones. It will reintroduce audiences to Keanu Reeves' hacker Neo, Carrie-Anne Moss' Trinity, and a younger version of mentor figure Morpheus, played by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II. Unlike the original trilogy, which was created, written, and directed by the Wachowski Sisters, The Matrix Resurrections will see the return of only Lana Wachowski, with Lilly Wachowski taking some time away from the film industry.
In an interview with EW, the film's actors, director, and part of the production team have spoken in-depth about the film and the risks associated with making it. According to stunt coordinator Scott Rogers, Lana Wachowski believed that the film was a leap of faith. However, Reeves had more confidence, saying he had "a lot of faith in that leap." Part of the risks associated with the film was in its complex plot, with EW reporting that the film examines the reasoning behind returning to The Matrix, both in real life for Lana Wachowski and on-screen for the returning cast. So far, the film's marketing has declined to give too much away about the plot or story, other than the return of past characters. Recent TV-spot footage hints that the film could follow a complex film-in-a-film style plot, which sort of aligns with EW's coverage. Fans have also theorized that The Matrix Resurrections will explore the Matrix-in-a-Matrix theory, which has been discussed since the early days of the original trilogy.
However, the biggest question is likely to be about the return of Reeves and Moss to their leather-clad characters, as the original trilogy concluded with their deaths. The Matrix series has a history of exploring mind-bending themes, so it shouldn't come as a surprise to see them return, even if it turns out to be for more complex reasons than initially seems to be the case. With any more trailers for The Matrix Resurrections now unlikely, fans will have to wait until the film hits theatres to learn more about the return of Neo and Lana Wachowski.
