M3GAN 2 Officially Announced: Title & 2025 Release Date Already Set
M3GAN 2 is officially happening and already has a 2025 release date set by Blumhouse. The 2023 movie year found a surprise hit out the gate with the killer A.I. doll movie M3GAN becoming a box office, critical, and viral sensation. The film followed an inventor named Gemma, played by Allison Williams, who creates an A.I. doll meant to help protect, teach, and play with children. However, M3GAN's programming leads her to take a violent turn and begin killing those who pose a threat to Cady (Violet McGraw). The success of M3GAN and its popularity online has left hopes for a sequel quite high.
After confirming before that a sequel was already being talked about, THR now reports that M3GAN 2 is officially happening - and will be titled M3GAN 2.0 - and has a January 17, 2025, release date already set. Akela Cooper is returning to write the script after working on the first movie and Malignant. Allison Williams and Violet McGraw are also confirmed to return as Gemma and Cady. There is no word yet if M3GAN cast members Amie Donald and Jenna Davis will return to bring the killer doll to life, while director Gerard Johnstone has yet to sign on for the sequel. Additionally, Allison Williams will produce M3GAN 2 alongside James Wan, Jason Blum, and others.
M3GAN's Sequel Announcement Makes It 2023 First Official Hit Movie
The announcement that M3GAN 2.0 is happening for a 2025 release date is confirmation that M3GAN is 2023's first hit movie. The horror movie was expected to be somewhat of a hit thanks to Blumhouse's great marketing campaign that made M3GAN's dances go viral and inspire new TikTok trends. What was a bit of a surprise was M3GAN's very positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. The movie is Certified Fresh and sits at an impressive 95% critic score. The great response from critics helped make a M3GAN 2 announcement even more likely.

M3GAN's box office success was evident from the movie's first weekend, where it surpassed expectations and made $30 million domestically. The early January release window has often been a great spot for horror movies, but M3GAN is not a poorly-reviewed entry in the genre that still succeeds thanks to lacking competition. Instead, the movie has continued to bring audiences in and will surpass $100 million worldwide imminently. With a reported budget of $12M, the potential for M3GAN to make ten times its budget could make the movie one of the most profitable releases throughout the entire year.
The quick announcement for M3GAN 2 is a reflection of the first movie's success critically and financially. Audiences will not have to wait too long to see M3GAN return after M3GAN's ending and terrorize Gemma and Cady again, as there will be a two-year turnaround on the sequel. That will be plenty of time for Akela Cooper and the rest of the M3GAN team to find new songs for the killer AI to sing, dance to, and play as the toy kills more people in M3GAN 2.0.
