M. Night Shyamalan's Glass Trailer & Comic-Con 2018 Poster
The first trailer for M. Night Shyamalan's Glass is online, following its premiere during Universal's Hall H panel at this year's San Diego Comic-Con. Shyamalan's latest thriller serves as the long-awaited followup to his 2000 film Unbreakable, bringing back Bruce Willis and Samuel L. Jackson as (respectively) the hero and villain of the director's own superhero movie, David Dunn and Elijah "Mr. Glass" Price. Glass will set the pair against a new opponent in the form of The Beast (James McAvoy), the dangerous super-human being whom Shyamalan introduced to the big screen in his 2017 kidnapping thriller, Split.
Fans have been anticipating the showdown between David, Elijah, and The Beast (aka. Kevin Wendell Crumb) in Glass since seeing the ending to Split, which confirmed the film takes place in the same movie universe as Unbreakable. Universal, for its part, has been hyping the Glass trailer's SDCC premiere throughout the past week by releasing teasers centered around The Beast, David, and Mr. Glass on a daily basis. The trailer was finally unveiled today, as evidenced by the video in the space above.
Like the Glass preview that screened at CinemaCon earlier this year, the official trailer reveals that David, Elijah, and Kevin find themselves locked up together in the film, in part because the three claim to be comic book characters who exist in the real world (and also because, y'know, Elijah and Kevin were both responsible for killing several people). Sarah Paulson costars in Glass as the therapist who's tasked with trying to understand these three men and who they really are. Suffice it to say, though, that doesn't work out and David, Elijah, and Kevin eventually break free, as David sets out to stop The Beast before he kills again. As one might expect from the preview for a Shyamalan movie, the Glass trailer plays things close to the chest and does its best to generate interest in the film, but without giving away too much in the process. The actual film will be tasked with paying off plot threads from both Unbreakable and Split, including the latter's subplot involving Casey Cooke (Anya Taylor-Joy): the abused young woman who was kidnapped by Kevin's unsavory personalities and managed to survive her first encounter with the Beast. Kevin's Disassociate Identity Disorder will also be explored in greater depth in Glass, revealing more of his 24 personalities in total (The Beast included).
It will certainly be interesting to see if Shyamalan can bring these various threads to a satisfying conclusion in Glass, especially as Elijah's story moves to the foreground (as suggested by the film's title). Both Unbreakable and Split have been praised for not only their rich world building, but also how they weave together different superhero and thriller tropes. Both have simultaneously been criticized for their treatments of disabilities and uneven tones, so it remains to be seen if Glass addresses either of those issues, even while it brings Shyamalan's trilogy to a close.
