First look photos of the new thriller miniseries The Girl Before features Loki and Selma stars. The 4-part show was created by J.P. Delaney and adapts his 2016 novel of the same name, with Lisa Brühlmann (Killing Eve) set to direct. Though a release date has yet to be announced, The Girl Before will stream on HBO Max in the US and air on BBC in the UK.

The premise of Delaney's show sees Jane, played by Loki star Gugu Mbatha-Raw, take the opportunity to move into an ultra-minimalist house designed by David Oyelowo's (Selma) enigmatic architect, Edward. The only stipulation is that all occupants must live by Edward's strict rules, and Jane begins to feel herself being changed in unexpected ways by the house. When she learns about her predecessor, Emma (Jessica Plummer), and notices unnerving similarities between them, she is forced to ask herself if they will end up meeting the same fate.

Now, HBO Max has released first-look images of The Girl Before that highlight the Loki and Selma stars. In one, Oyelowo and Mbatha-Raw stare each other down intensely, while another has the architect with his arms around Plummer's Emma, Jane's predecessor. Finally, the third image shows Mbatha-Raw staring through glass, her reflection a ghostly double. Check out the images below:

These early images are suggestive of the character dynamics to be seen in The Girl Before, particularly that of a reflected Jane, which seems to represent her being somehow changed by the architect's house. The still of Oyelowo and Plummer is also unsettling, with their expressions undermining what otherwise resembles a loving embrace, and the Selma actor's eyes staring toward the camera in a vaguely threatening way. Not pictured in these three first-look images is the fourth announced cast member, Ben Hardy as Simon, known to viewers for playing Archangel in 2016's X-Men: Apocalypse.

While the images are intriguing, the cast itself is enough to create interest in The Girl Before. Viewers who saw Oyelowo portray Martin Luther King Jr. in Selma are well aware of his talents, and while many have loved Mbatha-Raw since they saw her in the beloved Black Mirror episode "San Junipero," her role as Judge Renslayer in the MCU series Loki endeared her to a much wider audience. A thriller that sees those two square off, particularly with the production values of HBO and BBC to back it up, should be a must-see when it releases.
