Lana Wachowski Wants The Matrix 4 To Be Absolutely Crazy
Lana Wachowski, who directed the original The Matrix trilogy with her sister, is returning for The Matrix 4 and plans for it to be "absolutely crazy." The classic sci-fi films have a cult following, so it wasn't too surprising when Warner Bros. announced they were developing a revival of the franchise. Starring Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss, and Laurence Fishburne, the 1999 film is set in a dystopian future in which humans are unknowingly imprisoned in a simulated reality, aptly called the Matrix. Reeves' Neo discovers the truth and becomes part of a rebellion fighting to free humanity from the hostile artificial intelligence, keeping them trapped.
The films are praised for their original premise and innovative visuals and action sequences. The Wachowskis stated after filming the trilogy that they had no plans to make any more Matrix films, but that's since changed. Reeves and Moss are returning, along with a few other familiar faces, such as Jada Pinkett Smith as Niobe and Lambert Wilson as The Merovingian. Unfortunately, some favorites will not be coming back, like Fishburne and Hugo Weaving, who played the main antagonist Agent Smith.
Stunt coordinator and director of the John Wick trilogy, Chad Stahelski, who was also Keanu Reeves' stunt double for the first and second Matrix films, discusses working with Wachowski in an interview with Collider. He previously confirmed that he would be helping out with choreography and the like. Stahelski talks about Wachowski's approach to a specific fight sequence they are working on for the upcoming film.

Stahelski praises Wachowski and her vision, saying "If you love the Matrix trilogy, you’re going to love what she’s doing because she’s brilliant and fun and understands what the fans want.”
Wachowski, along with her sister, previously wrote and directed films like Speed Racer and Jupiter Ascending, and created the Netflix series Sense8. Lilly Wachowski could not return for The Matrix 4 as she is producing the TV series Work in Progress, but she fully supports the movie. Along with returning cast members, there has been a lot of new cast announced for The Matrix 4. This includes Jonathan Groff, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Jessica Henwick, Neil Patrick Harris, and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, who is reportedly playing a young Morpheus. The movie has also cast many actors that Wachowski has worked with on Sense8, including Brian J. Smith, Max Riemelt, Toby Onwumere, and Eréndira Ibarra.
There's no official title yet for the movie, which was four weeks into production when it was forced to shut down due to the coronavirus pandemic. Warner Bros. hopes that production may start back up again by July. The Matrix 4 currently has a release date of May 21, 2021, which was shared with Reeves other franchise's next film, John Wick: Chapter 4, before it moved to May 27, 2022. This is likely due to The Matrix 4's delay in production, creating scheduling conflicts for Reeves.
