Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom Changes Genres Halfway Through
The upcoming Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom is breaking away from familiarity by changing genres halfway through the movie. While all three trailers for the film showcase two diverse central locations, director J.A. Bayona has confirmed that Fallen Kingdom will significantly shift its tone in the movie’s second act.
Universal’s latest and final trailer for Fallen Kingdom further expands on locations and plot points showcased in the first two trailers, with a clearer focus on how the plot will unfold. The official synopsis has Jurassic World’s Owen (Chris Pratt) and Claire (Bryce Dallas Howard) revisiting the island on a dinosaur rescue mission. When they discover that the operation is more corrupt than they were led to believe, they make their way to the mysterious Lockwood Estate to uncover a sinister plot.
During an interview with EW, Bayona stated that the shift in location will also be paired with a drastic tonal change, explaining that even though the first half of the movie will give audiences everything they might expect from the franchise, “the second half moves to a totally different environment that feels more suspenseful, darker, claustrophobic, and even has this kind of gothic element.” He also explained that even though The Lost World: Jurassic Park treaded similar territory, moving some of the dinosaurs off the island and into the U.S., the changes in Fallen Kingdom will feel take an even further leap away from the franchise’s familiar look and feel. Pratt elaborated on Bayona’s statement, adding:
“At the end of the day, we’re all trying to make something that will be part of the Jurassic empire and tonally match the previous movies, but we’re going off in a new direction.”
Whereas the first two trailers primarily honed in on Fallen Kingdom’s action/adventure elements, the latest trailer is loaded with imagery that leans closer to the horror genre. In fact, Bayona even retweeted a fan’s tweet that included some of the trailer’s more horrific shots, including the Mesosaurus attacking surfers and a silhouette of the Indoraptor roaring against a full moon. The tweet was captioned with: “OK @filmBayona is about to end my entire life.”
Bayona is no stranger to the horror genre, so it makes sense why Universal brought him aboard as director on Fallen Kingdom. His breakout film The Orphanage was a critical darling, showcasing his talent with tension, mood, and an overall sense of dread. And though some of his later films, including The Impossible and A Monster Calls, focused more on drama and fantasy, respectively, they still highlighted his masterful control of suspense. These elements are front and center in the latest trailer, and will ultimately serve as the focal tone in the second half of the film.
