James Gunn Made a Horror Movie for Sony - And it Releases This November
James Gunn appears to have made a horror movie for Sony Pictures - and it's slated to release this November. Earlier this summer, Gunn teased a surprise movie announcement coming during Sony's panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2018, but the reveal was pulled at the last minute after The Walt Disney Studios fired the filmmaker as director of Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Given Disney's sudden decision to let go of Gunn, Sony didn't want to take any chances at tarnishing their presentation, so they pulled the reveal.
Shortly before SDCC began, it was speculated that Gunn was either working on an adaptation of the Japanese manga Berserk or Bloodborne, a PS4 exclusive game from 2015 that was developed by acclaimed studio FromSoftware. Since the surprise announcement never came, fans never got confirmation or denial on the speculation - and, unfortunately, speculation is all that's left of the project. No one knows what the announcement would've been. However, while Sony never announced the movie, it seems like they still plan on releasing it... later this year.
A recent release schedule from Sony Pictures reveals an Untitled James Gunn Horror Movie hitting theaters on November 30, via Screen Gems. Given this official slate, it seems like Gunn's untitled movie is already done, which would be highly irregular. Even if Gunn managed to film an entire movie without anyone knowing, there are still plenty of questions that need answering. Screen Rant has reached out to Sony Pictures. Update: Sony confirms to Screen Rant that James Gunn's movie is still scheduled to release this November.
Given the fact that Sony still plans on releasing the movie this year, Disney firing Gunn over Comic-Con weekend really hindered their marketing plans. But, with Gunn still in the news, they may be able to get away with a truncated marketing campaign, something that significantly affected Lucasfilm's Solo: A Star Wars Story earlier this year.
In addition to the release date announcement, it's been revealed that Gunn made a horror movie. While it's unclear what the movie will be about, being in the horror genre technically falls in line with speculation that it's a Bloodborne adaptation. Although the game is more action-suspense than horror, it still has horror elements that would translate well onto the big screen. That doesn't mean Gunn's movie is a Bloodborne adaptation, but until Sony officially reveals the movie, that's all audiences have to go on.
