House Of The Dragon Season 2 Filming & Release Date Teased By Condal
House of the Dragon's showrunner Ryan Condal has revealed when season 2 of the show will start production. The Game of Thrones prequel, partly based on George R.R. Martin's Fire & Blood, has recently finished airing season 1, which starred Paddy Considine, Matt Smith, Olivia Cooke, and Emma D'Arcy. The show is set 200 years before the events of HBO's Game of Thrones, and follows the events leading up to the fall of House Targaryen, 172 years before Emilia Clarke's Daenerys was born.
Five days after the pilot episode aired, HBO had already renewed the series for season 2. However, co-showrunner and the director of the pilot Miguel Sapochnik left the series, having wanted to work on other projects instead. Following the massive success of season 1, plans for the next season have already begun.
Now, in an interview with Variety, Condal explained that season 2 of House of the Dragon will begin shooting in early 2023. However, the showrunner did not say when in early 2023 production will begin. He also has no idea if season 2 will begin airing next year, or in early 2024, stating that it is "to be determined," being now the sole showrunner of the series after Miguel Sapochnik's departure.
When Will House Of The Dragon Season 2 Really Premiere?
While late 2023 does seem like a possibility, as is the case with many television series which work differently than film productions, the show is more likely to release sometime in 2024. Production on the first season of House of the Dragon began in April 2021, and wrapped in February 2022. In that timeframe, the first episode was released in late August 2022, and the finale aired two months later, on October 23.
Realistically, the show may very well release season 2 in early 2024. With season 1 ending with a cliffhanger ending, in which Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D'Arcy) learns of Lucerys' (Elliot Grihault) death, revealing a face in tears before the show cuts to black, one wonders how his death will be a major factor in her arc going forward. If season 2 of House of the Dragon will release sometime in 2024, there could be a time jump between the events of season 1 and season 2. This could lead audiences closer and closer to the Targaryen civil war of succession when House of the Dragon eventually returns.
