Henry Cavill Approves of Shazam! With CGI Mustache

Justice League star Henry Cavill likes and comments on fan art of Zachary Levi in costume as the titular character for Warner Bros. and DC Films’ Shazam! with a digitally added mustache. Over the last few years, Warner Bros. has struggled to get their shared superhero universe to a place where it’s both commercially and critically successful. Though Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad were box office successes, they received mixed-to-poor reviews. Wonder Woman seemed to be a step in the right direction with positive reviews and a successful box office run, but Justice League was arguably two steps back.

The production on Justice League has been well documented, with Joss Whedon taking over reshoots from director Zack Snyder after the latter stepped down (or was forced out by Warner Bros. according to recent reports). Further, Paramount refused to let Cavill shave his Mission: Impossible 6 mustache for Justice League reshoots, forcing Warner Bros. to digitally remove it from the actor’s scenes as Superman – resulting in one of the most criticized aspects of Justice League’s CGI. Those involved in Justice League have been able to laugh at Cavill’s mustache removal, including Snyder and the actor himself. Now, it seems other members of the DC Films universe are joining in on the fun.

Shazam! movie star Zachary Levi, who will play the adult superhero to Asher Angel’s young Billy Batson, posted to his Instagram a piece of fan art created by BossLogic. The piece took a set photo of Levi in costume as Shazam and digitally gave him a mustache. Levi posted the art and tagged Cavill, who not only liked the photo, but commented as well. In the months leading up to Justice League’s release, Cavill’s mustache and its digital removal from his Superman scenes were a major topic of discussion – not just for fans, but for those involved as well. Cavill went into the process of how the mustache was removed, while Mission: Impossible – Fallout director Christopher McQuarrie explained why Cavill couldn’t shave it off. Further reports indicated Paramount rejected Warner Bros’ offer to pay to add a mustache to Cavill in Mission: Impossible, and when they couldn’t make a deal with Paramount, WB didn’t pay a great deal of money to remove it from the actor’s Superman scenes.

Now with Justice League behind Warner Bros., the studio is moving forward with the next few movies on their DC slate, including James Wan’s Aquaman, Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman 2, and David F. Sandberg’s Shazam! The latter has been filming for a few weeks and photos from the set have revealed Levi’s Shazam! costume as well as Mark Strong as Dr. Sivana. It remains to be seen when Warner Bros. will release our first official look at Shazam!, but fans will undoubtedly be curious to see what Sandberg and the studio have planned and whether it will be another step in the right direction for the DC Films’ universe.
