DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn has teased that Green Lantern may have a promising future in the DC Universe. The iconic superhero, who is a major fixture in the Justice League of the comics, has struggled to make it to live-action in recent years. After the infamous 2011 Green Lantern film starring Ryan Reynolds flopped, the live-action DCU has only featured brief glimpses of Green Lantern characters of any kind.

Today on Twitter, Gunn celebrated American Thanksgiving by sharing a post of a comic book panel showing the Justice League and the Justice Society of America coming together for a Thanksgiving feast. A fan responded to the image, noting that Green Lantern was not present and asserting that Gunn and his co-CEO Peter Safran have no intention of bringing back Green Lantern and "this is a scoop i am 100% confident in." Gunn responded coyly, saying "Probably not a good scoop! Happy Thanksgiving!" Check out the post below:

Green Lantern's Future In The DCU

For some time, the promise of more Green Lantern has been in the DCU's future, even if at times it has still seemed like only a distant possibility. Warner Bros. announced plans for a Green Lantern Corps movie in 2014. Additionally, a Green Lantern series was in development with Arrowverse creator Greg Berlanti, intended to debut on HBO Max around 2023. The series was intended to focus on several different Green Lanterns, namely Alan Scott (Jeremy Irvine), Guy Gardner (Finn Wittrock), Jessica Cruz, and Simon Baz, with each of their stories taking place in a different timeline.

That show was making progress until last month, when it was announced that Green Lantern was being retooled, with writer and showrunner Seth Grahame-Smith leaving the project. He had already written the full eight-episode series, but those scripts were scrapped in favor of a new direction. The show is now being recentered around just one character: the Green Lantern John Stewart. Plans for a Green Lantern Corps movie never made much progress.

So far, not very much has been revealed about what intentions Gunn and Safran have for the future of the DC Universe. However, this tease would seem to indicate that more Green Lantern content is on the horizon beyond what has previously been announced. This may mean that a Green Lantern film is on the horizon, most likely as part of an ensemble rather than a solo lead. Now that Henry Cavill has returned as Superman, Green Lantern could help rebuild the Justice League. It would be the perfect place for the hero to re-emerge and potentially as a tie-in with the Green Lantern show, should it make it to air.
