"GOT:AKOTSK:THK": New Game Of Thrones Spinoff's Lengthy Title Throws Fans Off
The lengthy title for the new Game of Thrones prequel is throwing fans off. After the phenomenal success of Game of Thrones, which was based on George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire books, HBO moved forward with multiple spinoffs based on the fantasy author's other works set in Westeros, particularly House of the Dragon. This also includes a prequel show based on Martin's Tales of Dunk and Egg novellas, which recently received an official straight-to-series order from HBO.
Shortly after the new Game of Thrones prequel show was announced by HBO, fans took to Twitter to react to its comically long title – Game of Thrones: A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight. One fan shortened the title to "GOT:AKOTSK:THK" and quipped about how the franchise is in "two colon territory now." Check out some of the reactions below:
Why The New Game of Thrones Spinoff Title Is So Long
The new spinoff will follow the adventures of Ser Duncan the Tall and his unusually small squire, Egg, about a century before the events of Game of Thrones. The prequel show will adapt Martin's ongoing Dunk and Egg series, which currently consists of three novellas – The Hedge Knight, The Sworn Sword, and The Mystery Knight. They were later published together in one book called A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. It's inexplicable why HBO chose to combine the title of the entire collection and the first novella for its adaptation, though the result is clearly a clunky title.
A better title for the Game of Thrones prequel probably would have been Dunk and Egg. It's simpler, cleaner, catchier and indicates the two titular characters the show will follow. If it's any comfort to fans, the show will probably omit Game of Thrones from its title in most instances and just go by A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight, similar to how House of the Dragon stands on its own. If audiences can get past the lengthy title, they should be in for another exciting adventure in Westeros when Dunk and Egg grace the small screen.
