Good Omens Petition to Cancel Series Incorrectly Addresses Netflix, Not Amazon
It appears not everyone is a fan of Amazon Prime's latest series Good Omens, as a Christian group has taken to creating a petition calling for the show's cancellation and addressed it to... Netflix. The six-part series is an adaptation of Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman's novel of the same name. It stars David Tennant and Michael Sheen as a demon named Crowley and an angel named Aziraphale, respectively, who team up to prevent the rise of the Antichrist and Armageddon. Along with the series' funny and instantly lovable leads, it also boasts an incredible supporting cast, from Jon Hamm as the Archangel Gabriel to Benedict Cumberbatch as Satan, and even Frances McDormand as God.
As far as petitions go, this year has already been a banner one. Only a few weeks ago, Game of Thrones fans created a petition calling for season 8 to be remade with new writers. Not long after that, a petition made the rounds through the Marvel fan base calling for Tony Stark to be revived instead of accepting his heartbreaking demise during the climactic finale in this year's Avengers: Endgame. It's been a year filled with a lot of conflict and opinion regarding entertainment, but this petition easily takes the cake as the most entertaining.
According to The Guardian, more than 20,000 Christians have signed a petition for Netflix asking for the cancellation of Amazon Prime's new series. The petition claims that Good Omens is "another step to make satanism appear normal, light and acceptable", adding that it "mock's God's wisdom", and, on that same note, God is "voiced by a woman". They pleaded to Netflix to cancel the show because it "makes light of Truth, Error, Good and Evil [and] destroys the barriers of horror that society still has for the devil". Gaiman addressed the irony of it all on Twitter, exclaiming, "I love that they are going to write to Netflix to try and get #GoodOmens cancelled. Says it all really". Netflix's Twitter accounts have also responded to the petition, as you can see below.
The series has proven to be a smashing success amongst critics and audiences, with some even saying it's far superior to Neil Gaiman's other televised adaptation, American Gods. So far, Amazon Prime hasn't called for a second season of the series, but the thought is lingering in the air. A sequel to the original story doesn't exist, but Gaiman and Pratchett had discussed that possibility, even coming up with a title and a few story elements. With this in mind, fans can at least keep their fingers crossed for a continuation.
The increase of petitions geared towards pieces of entertainment has become a ridiculous and disrespectful pattern. Though many people might not like, nor agree, with the way a series or movie unfolded, it's hurtful to disregard those that put their time and effort into making something that they'd hoped the best for. In the case of Good Omens, there's no chance of the petition changing anything about the series, especially with it being addressed to the wrong streaming service. If one thing's for certain, it surely makes for a good laugh.
