Ghost of Tsushima Movie In The Works From John Wick Director

A Ghost of Tsushima movie is in development from Sony, led by John Wick director Chad Stahelski. The film will adapt the hit PlayStation 4 video game developed by Sucker Punch Productions, which has sold more than 6.5 million copies in less than a year. The new project is one of several such PlayStation adaptations currently on the way, including the Tom Holland-led Uncharted film and HBO’s The Last of Us series starring Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey.

Ghost of Tsushima tells the story of Jin Sakai, a 13th-century samurai from the island of Tsushima who battles against an army of Mongol invaders led by Khotun Khan. Bloodied and beaten after the initial attacks, Jin embarks on a quest to gather strength and take back his home. The game was highly praised on release for its gameplay and stylish visual design, seen by many as a solid send-off to the PlayStation 4 era as the PlayStation 5 neared release.

Per Deadline, a film adaptation of Ghost of Tsushima, is currently in development from Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions. John Wick’s Chad Stahelski will lead the project. Alex Young and Jason Spitz from Stahelski’s 87Eleven Entertainment will produce, along with Asad Qizilbash and Carter Swan of PlayStation Productions. Sucker Punch will also serve in an executive production capacity led by Peter Kang. Sucker Punch director Nate Fox shared his excitement for the project in an official statement, saying that "The idea of translating our game into a new medium is exciting, and we’re intrigued by the possibilities."

In December, Sony announced that it was developing three movies and seven series based on PlayStation video game properties. Presumably, Ghost of Tsushima was one of the alluded films. The company previously had plans to adapt an earlier Sucker Punch franchise, Sly Cooper, as an animated feature film. However, those plans fizzled after the critical and box office failure of Ratchet & Clank. Since then, Sony seems to have a more concentrated effort into film and TV adaptations.

The Ghost of Tsushima movie adds another name to a long list of upcoming video game adaptations. Netflix has announced original films and series based on several popular game franchises, including Assassin’s Creed, Resident Evil, and Splinter Cell. Those will add to the streamer’s existing game adaptations like Castlevania and Dota: Dragon’s Blood. Theaters will also be seeing a fair share of video game-based releases in the near future, including Mortal Kombat, which premieres on April 16, and Sonic the Hedgehog 2. The field of video game adaptations has historically been littered with disappointments. Still, that trend seems to be changing of late, and hopefully, it will continue to improve with Ghost of Tsushima.
