Game of Thrones: Final Season Won’t Be Used to Launch Spinoffs

It looks like David Benioff and D. B. Weiss’ HBO hit Game of Thrones is going to be getting a proper send-off when the final season airs and will not be used to launch the much-buzzed about prequel or spin-off series in development. As of now, HBO has recruited Carly Wray (Mad Men, The Leftovers) Max Borenstein (Kong: Skull Island), Jane Goldman (Kingsman: The Golden Circle), Brian Helgeland (Legend) and another unannounced writer to tackle the mutiple different story ideas set in author George R.R. Martin’s world that are ready to be bought to life on the small screen.

Even though the seventh season of Game of Thrones won’t be airing until this July, programming president Casey Bloys is already spilling details about HBO’s plans for future series taking place in the land of Westeros – once Game of Thrones comes to an end in its eighth season.

In an interview with EW, Bloys breaks down everything we need to know about the spin-offs from when we should expect them to air to the possibility of them being aired in an anthology format. Here is what Bloys had to say about their strategy to develop mutiple prequels and spin-offs at once (something the network has never attempted before):

“You couldn’t do this with a lot of shows. In talking with the drama group here, and the nice thing is George has created an entire universe. The fact that there’s enough material to even contemplate making different prequels is crazy when you think about it. George has all these histories he’s thought about and that’s one reason why the books are so good.

The other reason, frankly, as I said, is the bar is so high. If you only developed one, everything would rest on that one shot. It’s such a special show. I want to make sure that [any prequel] feels worthy. We have some amazing writers who want to take a shot at this. They’re also looking at different times in the universe and all will have different feels. This increases our odds of finding one that’s unique.”

Bloys also discussed the possibility of the Game of Thrones spin-offs being created and written in a competently different format than Game of Thrones by going the now-popular anthology route similar to series like American Horror Story and Fargo, or the limited series route similar to HBO’s own The Night Of and Big Little Lies. Here is what Bloys had to say about the different options being considered:

“At this point, everything is on the table. The idea is to find a series. It would be nice to find something that has the legs this one did. But if something works better as a limited series, sure.”

Bloys also made it clear in the interview that the spin-offs and/or prequels will not be riding off the upcoming series finale of Game of Thrones set to air in either 2018 or 2019, but will be tackled once the finale of Game of Thrones is set in stone and will be completely separate from the finale. Here is what Bloys had to say about Game of Thrones getting its proper send-off:

“Making Game of Thrones as good as possible is the No. 1 goal, and then we’ll see about these scripts. You’re not going to see a situation where the next show in the Thrones universe launches off the back of this one. The show that Dan and David have created will get its proper send off first. We wouldn’t want to take away from that in any way.”
