Fargo Season 4 A ‘Long Shot’ To Premiere In 2019

Fans of FX’s Fargo shouldn’t hold their breath for season 4 of the anthology series in 2019, according to creator Noah Hawley. That unpleasant comes from the creator not long after he confirmed he finally had an idea for a new season, one that would once again see the screwball crime drama become a period piece. And if his predictions are correct, it could mean FX will have to amend its announcement of there being more Minnesota nice on television next year.


To be fair, talk of a fourth season Fargo has come a long way in a relatively short period of time. Following the season 3 finale, the future of the series was up in the air, with FX boss John Landgraf more or less saying the series would continue when and if Hawley had something else to say. Hawley, it seems, didn’t take that freedom for granted, as he’s ready to get down to the task of writing new episodes, just as soon as he has some free time in an increasingly busy schedule.


As Hawley tells The Wrap, however, his commitments to shows like Legion and Cat’s Cradle, in addition to film projects like the astronaut drama Pale Blue Dot and Fox’s planned Doctor Doom film, aren’t the only things standing in the way of Fargo season 4 hitting screens in a year’s time. It’s also about the logistics of getting the entire project together, not to mention filming a show that’s set during winter. Hawley said:

“I think realistically we will certainly be filming it next year. Mostly just because it’s a winter show. You know, I have to write [the episodes], then we have to prep it, then we have to film it, which means it’s either this coming winter or next winter.


Given my schedule with making a movie and posting a movie this summer, and then gearing up to do more ‘Legion’ assuming we get a pickup. It seems like a long shot that I can launch ‘Fargo’ 4 this winter.”

On the offhand chance Hawley can get cameras rolling on Fargo early next year it’s not inconceivable to think season 4 could find a spot on FX’s late 2019 schedule. That is, of course, if everything goes according to plan. Hawley has historically taken his time between seasons, though, with more than a year passing between season 1 and 2. It would be another 16 months after the second season before season 3 premiered, which definitely puts a damper on the idea of there being new episodes before 2020.


Stranger things have happened, though, and given Hawley’s ability to juggle multiple commitments at the same time, FX may hit is target date after all. After a somewhat disappointing season 3, though, fans of the show might be willing to wait if it means a stronger showing from the quirky anthology series.
