Everything We Know About Netflix's Spiderhead
Here's everything you need to know about Spiderhead, an upcoming science fiction movie featuring a high-profile cast. The Netflix adaptation is based on George Saunders' 2010 short story "Escape from Spiderhead," which was published in The New Yorker and includes a dystopian premise. Spiderhead Is Reportedly In Development At Netflix
According to a September 2020 report, Top Gun: Maverick filmmaker Joseph Kosinski will helm Netflix's adaptation of Spiderhead. In the past, Kosinkski directed the action films TRON: Legacy, Oblivion, and Only the Brave. Spiderhead will be written by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, who previously collaborated for the Deadpool and Zombieland scripts, along with the 2019 Netflix blockbuster 6 Underground.
Spiderhead Release Date
Netflix hasn't set a premiere date for Spiderhead, but the film most likely won't be released for several years. MCU star Chris Hemsworth has committed to the project, which is just one of several notable features that he's currently attached to. Hemsworth will reprise his role as Thor in the MCU Phase 4 film Thor: Love and Thunder (February 2022 release), and he's also set to portray the iconic professional wrestler Terry Bollea aka Hulk Hogan in a biopic. In addition, Hemsworth has also signed on for the Netflix sequel Extraction 2. Expect Spiderhead to receive a tentative 2023 release date, though it's certainly possible that Netflix may prioritize a 2022 premiere.
Spiderhead Cast
Hemsworth headlines the Spiderhead cast in an unknown role, though he'll presumably portray the narrator of Saunders' story, Jeff. Aside from the aforementioned projects, Hemsworth recently appeared as Agent H in Men in Black: International and will reprise his role as Thor in the animated Disney+ series What If...?
Jurnee Smollett will have a co-starring role in Spiderhead, possibly as one of Jeff's love interests, Heather or Rachel. The American actress delivered a breakthrough performance in the 1997 film Eve's Bayou, and currently stars as Letitia "Leti" Lewis in Lovecraft Country. Smollett recently portrayed Rosalee in the WGN series Underground and Dinah Lance/Black Canary in Birds of Prey.
Miles Teller has also been confirmed for Spiderhead, and may portray the pharmaceutical visionary Ray Abnesti. In pop culture, Teller is best known for starring as Peter in the Divergent franchise and Reed Richards in Fantastic Four. Teller also portrayed Sutter in The Spectacular Now and Andrew in Whiplash. He recently starred as Martin Jones in the Amazon Prime series Too Old to Die Young and portrays Bradley "Rooster" Bradshaw in Top Gun: Maverick.
