Emilia Clarke & Chiwetel Ejiofor To Lead Bizarre New Sci-Fi Rom-Com
Emilia Clarke and Chiwetel Ejiofor will star in the upcoming sci-fi rom-com The Pod Generation. Clarke is best known for her work in major franchises, including her Game of Thrones role as Daenerys Targaryen, as well as Terminator Genisys and Solo: A Star Wars Story. Meanwhile, Ejiofor was renowned for his leading role in 12 Years a Slave, and recently voiced Scar in the live-action remake of The Lion King. In 2016, the actor starred as Baron Mordo in Doctor Strange.
Variety has confirmed that Clarke and Ejiofor will play the romantic leads in The Pod Generation. Clarke will play Rachel while Ejiofor will play her husband, Alvy. In the film, the couple is ready to take the next step in their relationship and have a child together, but not in a typical way. Rachel works in the tech world and gains access to technology that allows partners to share the side effects of pregnancy via detachable wombs. Ejiofor's character is a botanist who is more hesitant about this relatively new method of pregnancy, but is willing to try anything for his wife.
While the premise of The Pod Generation seems to be based on technology that won't exist come around for hundreds of years, if ever, this movie is only set in the near future. What is particularly intriguing is that the filmmakers have chosen to explore this subject matter in the context of a rom-com, which will no doubt be a strange mix with a sci-fi narrative. The film's director, Sophia Bartes, has even commented on the infinite amount of "comedic material" that can come from the "idea of the artificial womb as either doom or liberation for women."
It's reassuring to see a female director behind the helm of a reproductive-centric rom-com, and with stars like Clarke and Ejiofor behind the film, it certainly has the potential to succeed. Filming begins in March 2022, so The Pod Generation will likely hit theaters in 2023.
