Dragon Built with 1200 Sheets of Paper to Honor Game of Thrones' Final Season
Office supplier Viking Direct builds a paper dragon to honor the final season of Game of Thrones. Aside from using the equivalent of 1,200 sheets of A4 paper, Viking enlisted artist Andy Singleton to bring the dragon to life, which was then set up as an office surprise for employees.
On the HBO fantasy series Game of Thrones, various families rely on tradition and violence to survive, with the main players forming alliances to ensure long-term control. Over the past seven seasons, Game of Thrones has woven together many different subplots to not only build character arcs, but to establish context for the Great War - a battle between the living and the dead. In the Game of Thrones season 7 finale, the primary villain - the Night King - rides an undead dragon named Viserion, which previously belonged to Daenerys Targaryen and was killed during battle. Early on in Game of Thrones, Daenerys receives three dragon eggs as a gift - a reference to her family’s dragon history. Ultimately, the three dragons are born, making Daenerys the “Mother of Dragons.” In promotional clips for Game of Thrones season 8, the dragons play an important role, and will undoubtedly be pivotal for the Battle of Winterfell, which will feature the longest battle sequence ever depicted on screen.
Recently, Viking released a video and blog post about their Game of Thrones-inspired dragon created solely from paper. On the company’s official website, Viking details the theme selection, noting, “We knew we needed something massive, something striking.” Given the pop culture relevance of dragons, Viking easily pinpointed their subject and committed a full 10 days to its paper creation. Ultimately, the project required 110 hours for designing, building, and installing the dragon. On YouTube, Viking released the video “Making an Office Paper Dragon,” a 98-second clip that features time-lapse video of the project. Scored by Game of Thrones-like music, the video doesn’t feature any on-camera dialogue, but rather uses captions to complement the dragon’s paper evolution. Near the end, Viking states that the dragon had its “lair” at the office for a full week, and the clip suggests it clearly had an impact on Viking employees. As a final creative touch, the dragon received a burst of fire coming from its mouth, a nod to a major Game of Thrones theme, both literally and figuratively. Watch the full Viking video below.
Last week, Game of Thrones’ Kit Harington hosted Saturday Night Live, further creating more cultural buzz for the impending season 8 premiere. In a sketch about Game of Thrones crossover shows, Harington appears as his iconic character Jon Snow. In recent weeks, fan theories have intensified, while the Game of Thrones cast has made the media rounds to promote the final six episodes.
For Game of Thrones fans, and for TV fans in general, it’s a unique time considering that the unknown will soon be revealed on HBO’s game-changing series. In a matter of weeks, Game of Thrones will reach its series conclusion, and hopefully provide viewers with narrative resolution. Of course, there will undoubtedly be many surprises as well. Viking’s paper dragon creation further emphasizes Game of Thrones’ huge cultural impact.
