Dracula Sci-Fi Western Movie Receives Promising Update From Director
Chloé Zhao's Dracula movie is still in development, the writer/director confirms. After the failure of 2017's The Mummy led Universal to scrap plans for a shared Dark Universe franchise, the studio shifted focus to standalone auteur-driven monster movies, with Leigh Whannell’s The Invisible Man being the first example of this approach, which was a big box office success. The following year, a new Dracula movie was announced to be in development from Zhao, who won an Oscar for directing Nomadland and also helmed the Marvel Cinematic Universe movie Eternals.
Now, after several years of silence, Zhao has provided a promising update on her sci-fi Western Dracula movie. In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the Nomadland and Eternals director was asked if her Dracula film was still in development and Zhao responded, "Yes, I’m writing the script right now." The update comes as a huge relief after a different Dracula movie from director Karyn Kusama was scrapped due to creative differences, creating concern that Zhao's project might suffer the same fate.
Everything We Know About Chloé Zhao's Dracula Movie
First announced in February 2021, there hadn't been any updates on the status of Zhao's Dracula movie since the time it was announced, until now. While plot details are still under wraps, the project is far from a traditional take on the classic Universal monster, described as an "original, futuristic, sci-fi Western." Zhao's version is also expected to focus heavily on an ostracized Dracula living on the fringes of society, a theme the writer/director previously explored in Nomadland and was awarded with multiple Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Director.
Zhao's intriguing take on Dracula remains anticipated, and thanks to the recent update, it's clear that the project is still alive and in development. However, it's unclear how far along the script is or when production might actually begin. In the meantime, audiences will be treated to several other cinematic interpretations of the iconic Count, including Renfield starring Nicolas Cage as Dracula and Robert Eggers' Nosferatu remake, which was an unofficial adaptation of Bram Stoker's Dracula from 1922.
