David Fincher & Deadpool Director’s Love Death & Robots Gets Trailer, Premiere Date
Netflix’s Love, Death and Robots from Mindhunter creator David Fincher and Deadpool director Tim Miller has a new trailer, as well as a premiere date. Fincher has enjoyed a fruitful relationship with Netflix, going back to House of Cards, the series that helped the streaming service break through as a creator of acclaimed original content.
Fincher and Netflix also teamed up for Mindhunter, a drama series about FBI profilers picking the brains of imprisoned serial killers in hopes of developing tools to help them apprehend at-large murderers. Fincher’s newest project with Netflix, Love, Death and Robots, takes him into the world of animation for an anthology series with a decidedly adult slant. Deadpool director Tim Miller partnered with Fincher to develop the new series, which draws on 1970s comic books for its inspiration.
Netflix has now revealed that Love, Death and Robots will premiere on March 15, 2019. The first NSFW trailer for the sci-fi animated movie has also been released. The series promises to deliver everything from “sentient dairy products” to “rogue werewolf spiders” to “bloodthirsty demons from hell.” It will also tackle a multitude of themes, including “racism, government, war, free will, and human nature.” See the trailer below, as well as a poster for the series:
Love, Death and Robots includes 18 animated shorts altogether, covering an array of genres from horror and sci-fi to fantasy and comedy. Artists from all over the world have been called upon to lend their talents to the project, which will feature a diverse assortment of animation styles from traditional 2D all the way up to photo-realistic 3D computer animation. With its very adult content, the project feels reminiscent of the 1980s cult animated sci-fi movie Heavy Metal, though the technology being deployed here is obviously much more sophisticated and the animation approaches are much more varied.
Miller of course comes to the project with a background in visual effects and animation, having founded the effects house Blur Studio, which has worked on numerous video games and movies over the years. Miller and Blur have worked with Fincher previously as well, designing the title sequence for his adaptation of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. Blur also created the space sequences for James Cameron’s Avatar. Miller has since moved on to directing live action films, including Deadpool and the upcoming sequel Terminator 6.
Going by the above trailer, it looks like Love, Death and Robots is set to deliver a wild experience when it hits Netflix in March. The trailer features only brief snippets of the individual stories, so it will be interesting to find out the titles and synopses of each episode of the anthology series, to see what exactly Fincher and Miller have in store for their fellow sci-fi and animation fanatics.
